Superfoods have hit the mainstream, and rightly so. So, what is a superfood anyway? Simply put, superfoods are highly nutrient dense foods.
Most people in our modern world are consuming large amounts of nutrient-devoid foods, and find themselves constantly hungry, craving more, because they are not satiated. The body has not received the nutrients it needs to function optimally; high quantity of food consumption with few amount of nutrients.
Superfoods are added to their more mainstream produce counterparts (fruits and vegetables) in very small quantities, but pack an incredible nutrient punch. A smaller quantity of food consumption with a larger amount of nutrients.
Think of superfoods as your insurance policy. You consume organic whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and healthy oils as the bulk of your calories in a day to provide your body with the clean energy it needs to survive. You add in the superfoods to ensure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs to thrive.
The great thing about superfood smoothies is they enable you to get your daily nutritional requirements in (and then some) in one easily digested meal. By blending and masticating the ingredients, they are more bioavailable and easier to absorb, making it more likely that the body will actually absorb and use what you are putting into it. It’s all about absorption. Take the time to ask your Self, “Do I want to just survive, or do I want to thrive?”
These 3 superfood recipes below can help you take the steps to enhance your life.
Get creative. Use them as a launch pad. Focus on adding in the good. Your body, mind, and Spirit will thank you.
Sweet Strawberries and Kale
Not just another kale smoothie! Together with the powerhouse nutritional benefits of kale, the benefits of blue pigments from blueberry and phycocyanin, and clean protein from spirulina, this smoothie is a winner in the nutrition department. Plus, it doesn’t taste green. Who doesn’t love strawberries and vanilla?
- 2 big leaves of kale, destemmed
- 2 bananas
- 2-3 cups frozen strawberries
- 2 tbsp raw wild blueberry powder
- 1 tbsp raw lucuma
- 1 tsp spirulina
- 1 tsp blue pigment phycocyanin
- ½ tsp vanilla bean powder
- Pinch Himalayan salt
- 2 tbsp raw honey
- 2 cups raw nut milk of choice
Add all ingredients to your blender and blend until thick and creamy. Serves 2 – 3.
Bet you didn’t think of putting squash in your smoothie! Well, you can and it’s delicious combined with these warming and healing anti-inflammatory spices and immune boosting medicinal mushrooms. Alas, one more way to use up those beautiful winter squash hanging around in your pantry from the autumn harvest. Toss the squash in the oven and cook it as you would normally – no need to puree it after. Cut it into blender sized chunks, freeze in freezer bags, and you’re ready to rock this smoothie! Remember that pumpkin is a variety of winter squash too. Most varieties will work out fine, but I prefer the ones with deep orange flesh! So, go ahead, give your soup pot a wee break.
