We are all human, and being human means we are inevitably plagued by our emotions at times.

Whether you’re experiencing a supreme high or a downward spiral, these 5 tips below will help you in finding balance amidst the storm:

  1. Burn your favourite incense, oil, or candle—

As you practice this small gesture, give it your full attention. Watch as the flame dies down on the incense stick, as the steam rises from the oil, or as the candle flame flickers. Try and absorb yourself in the moment. By learning to be present, it can help us centre ourselves and become more grounded. It’s a useful skill for calming the physiological response to our busy minds. Plus, smells are great memory jerkers so the next time you smell it, your mind knows to return to that same headspace.

  1. Do your most favourite thing—

Treat yourself to a chocolate bar, a manicure, a relaxing bath, or read your favourite book. Do something to make yourself feel special. When we treat ourselves, it makes us feel loved and appreciated. Too often people rely on others to do this for them, but there is nothing wrong with doing this yourself!

  1. A lot of excess energy? Do some exercises—

Exercise can either perk us up when we’re feeling down or help us to find a sense of relaxation when we have too much energy. This is a great one to do whether you’re up or down.

  1. Talk to someone—

Talking helps us deal with our emotions. Bottling things up doesn’t help us in the long run. When we communicate with others, it can help us unearth things we hadn’t considered before and get another perspective on the situation. A word of warning though: you should only talk with friends who are open and trustworthy as you do not want to talk to someone who will not offer you good advice. Alternatively, speak to a therapist.

  1. Give yourself time to be present—

Quiet time is important. Sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves during an emotional roller coaster is to sit quietly alone and reflect. Practising walking meditation or taking five deep breaths in silence can be done anywhere, at any time. It’s important to feel the stillness inside us that is always there. This is the place that offers us real solace.

Use a combination of the above or find the one that works for you. The key to leveling out an emotional rollercoaster is to seek the stillness underneath.
