As a person constantly on the go, and someone who transitioned to a healthy lifestyle about five years ago, I have had to re-learn what essential items I need in my handbag so I can be on the go AND stay healthy. I’ve compiled a list for you below.
My Top 6 Handbag Must-Haves:
Stainless Steel Water Bottle
Everyone likely needs to be drinking more water to stay hydrated; the human adult body is comprised of about 60% water on average. However, do yourself a favor and avoid plastic. Invest a few dollars in a BPA- free reusable container, like stainless steel (glass is best but obviously, doesn’t travel well). BPA (bisphenol A is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s) can leach into and contaminate your beverage. Similarly, think about the to-go cups for hot coffee; the steam can trigger the release of even more chemicals from the plastic lid. And then you willingly drink the contents, yikes! By keeping one of these BPA-free reusable containers in your bag, you’ll always be at the ready to get water from a restaurant or water fountain, coffee, or tea to go in a much safer capacity. And you’ll be helping the environment, too, win-win!
A Healthy Snack
For the days when your schedule goes out the window when you’re caught without any prepared foods, or for a planned refuel (like before or after a workout). Healthy and clean protein bars are my favorite packable snacks because they’re individually wrapped, small, and hard to crush even at the bottom of your bag. The individual natural almond butter packets are a close second for the same reason. And you can never go wrong packing your own Ziploc bags of a PB&J sandwich and sliced veggies and hummus, (you can keep these in the freezer up until you need to throw them in your bag on your way out the door).
Travel-size Toothbrush and Toothpaste
Aside from the obvious reasons of having fresh breath and reducing gum disease, I always brush my teeth after eating a meal or snack, even when I’m on the go. I live by the philosophy that prevention is better than the cure, who wants to deal with cavities or dental surgery? Plus, having a healthy mouth reduces your risk for a whole host of other issues like heart disease and diabetes. Sign me up for the 2-minute inconvenience of having to brush at the airport or in the ladies room after a business lunch!
Essential Oil Roller
Not only does aromatherapy reduce stress during a frustrating time (sitting in traffic, waiting for an appointment, etc.) but packing a tiny, essential oil roller comes in handy if you are traveling and your seatmate smells, shall we say, less than pleasant. Also serves as a backup deodorant, cologne, or perfume in a pinch, too, if you forgot to apply yours that day.
Phone Charger and Portable Power Bank
I recently had to update my bag essentials for this one because of how much I rely on my phone to get anything done these days, in both my personal life and my business. I now keep both a fully charged portable power bank AND phone charger in my handbag because of those frustrating times when an available outlet in a restaurant, airport, or plane did not work or was simply unreachable, making a charger useless and the power bank a winner! Nothing is worse than having to make a call or figure out how to get to your hotel when your phone runs out of juice.
Don’t forget your vitamins! You can get a sleek and stylish vitamin case from Amazon for a few bucks and keep it in your bag. They even come in individual daily cases so you can pack them all for the week but just grab one for your bag each morning and stay on schedule. A pro tip is to set a reminder on your phone so remember to actually take them throughout the day!
