Our Need of a New Paradigm of Love Based Decision Making

Love is a decision – not an emotion! ― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

What is love based decision making and why is it needed? Love based decision making, simply put, is a decision made from the position of using spiritual principles in considering how the decision will affect all of those concerned. A love based decision asks us to think of more than ourselves and those close to us. To do our due diligence in thought and researching decisions that affect others. I attend a 12 step fellowship that stresses that “Our Common Welfare Must Come First.” Our unity as a fellowship depends on it.

I think that we have become a nation of people who have forgotten that we are all in this together. That what is best for all concerned needs to be the basis of all our decisions. To become selfless will allow us to take our direction from spiritual principles, not from our prejudices, bias, selfishness or ignorance.

If my values, morals and the consideration of others changes with the situation, I don’t have an established set of values and morals Selfish based decision making has caused so much pain and suffering in the USA and around the world. It is said that we are the wealthiest nation in the world. If that is so, why do we have children who will go to bed hungry tonight and families and individuals without homes and no place to stay? How is that possible? It comes once again from decisions that are not based in love. Decisions that are made to keep the Wealthy and Powerful, Wealthy and Powerful. Decisions that guns, bombs, war, bank accounts, prestige, position, things and foreign nations are more important than our people, rivers, lakes, oceans, animals, plant life and the food we eat.

Why is it so easy for us to have empathy and compassion for people we don’t know and have never met, but, we can’t have it for our neighbor down the street. How do you think our brothers and sisters that are struggling to make ends meet feel when they see our tax dollars being used to send aid to other countries? What is it that allows to shun, forget and neglect our men, women, and children? Is it guilt and shame from allowing it to become this bad that stops us from looking them in the eye, asking how we can help and reach out our hand to them?

How can we send our men and women into battle, risking their lives in our name and not give them the care they need when they return home injured, broken and disfigured? We gladly approve the spending of billions of dollars to go to war but we balk when it comes to funding the care our soldiers need when they return home.

The spiritual principles that allow us a sense of community, unity, and connection have eroded. We as a people have become fractured and the idea of a nuclear family has disappeared. Only love can heal our nation and bring us back together as a people. We need to put bias, prejudice, hatred, ignorance and selfishness behind us.

We are very often described as a great nation. I think we need to rethink that. I would disagree. We were once and could be again.

It only takes a simple choice….

And that choice is love.
