Are YOU living a passionate life? Or are you postponing living fully and being happy for “someday?”
According to a study in 2005, only 20% of working Americans were passionate about the work they did. The 2014 study showed some improvement in that a third were happy, but this is still a low figure. And a worldwide study of 142 countries in 2011-12 found that disengaged employees outnumbered engaged employees by 2 to 1. Effectively a significant majority of people work without passion and the majority of people we will meet and work with, lack the key ingredient for fulfillment.
Can you relate to this? You work five days a week and the weekend cannot come fast enough. Or you work eleven months of the year just to take your two-week holiday. We are spending about 90% of our time doing what we don’t enjoy so that we can spend 10% doing what we do enjoy!
So what is the secret to living a passionate life? Take breaks with purpose, whether 10 minutes a day, a mini break or a career break, to get clarity about what is important.
And I believe that there are five principles:
- Decide you are responsible for your life.
- Stop – take breaks with purpose.
- Get clarity – What’s your definition of happiness? What are you passionate about?
- Gather support network you need – whether you want more or less.
- Take action.
