Why do so many people quit on their dreams?

We all have dreams of what an ideal life would be. We know what we would look like, how much money we would have in the bank, where we would live, etc. But why do so many people fail to turn these dreams into reality? Is it a lack of resources or are they not smart enough?

I simply think it’s lack of motivation and a clearly defined goal. As a personal trainer, it’s my job to get my clients in the best physical shape possible through exercise and healthy eating. I’m very proud to say that all the clients that followed my advice for over three months changed their bodies and continue to get better with every passing week. But there are those few clients who gave up after only two weeks. Why weren’t they able to stick with it?

Getting a person to improve their physical appearance is easy. We change the way they eat, we push them throughout their training sessions. Anyone, no matter how old or how badly out of shape they are, can improve their appearance and overall health. The hard part as a trainer is finding what motivates each client. These days it’s not hard to become a personal trainer, most people can get certified in a few months. The best trainers out there not only have a great understanding of the human body and nutrition, they know how to light the fire in all their clients. They know exactly what motivates them and how to keep them on track.

From years of training people, and having dealt with thousands of individuals with different goals, there is one common denominator; the one thing that we all must know in order to succeed in anything in life.

That one common thing is, “What’s your WHY?” Why do you want this so bad?

If you know the answer to this and you make this a priority in your life, you will NOT fail. I guarantee you that if you find your WHY and you have a clearly defined goal and map out how to achieve this goal, you will always succeed. This applies to any area in your life, from your finances to your physical body, and everything in between.

If I told you that you had three months to lose twenty pounds or else you will die, (assuming you have twenty pounds to lose) I can assure you, you will find a way to get it done. Why is it that we need to go to such drastic measures to achieve something that will make us feel good?

The simple answer is that people don’t like change.

We like our routine and even if it’s harming our bodies. We’d rather stay comfortable in our discomfort than to make a change and step out of our comfort zone. Even though we know losing those twenty pounds would mean more energy, a better quality of life, fewer medications… the list goes on and on.

So, if you have a goal you would like to achieve, write it down. Be very specific about your goal, give as many details as possible, and set yourself a deadline. Write down how achieving this goal would make you feel, and how you would feel if you don’t attain it. Mark down what you need to do to achieve this goal. And finally, tell as many people close to you as possible. Here’s an example:

  • “I want to lose twenty pounds in three months.”
  • Losing this weight now will prove to me that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. It will give me more energy to play with my kids, I won’t have to take any more medications.
  • If I don’t lose this weight I might become pre-diabetic. I won’t have the energy to play with my kids. I risk shortening my life expectancy by ten years.
  • In order to achieve this goal, I MUST join a gym and hire an expert to help me with my nutrition. I must commit to a healthier lifestyle which includes no junk food, no soft drinks, etc.

Once this is done, make photocopies and give them out to all your loved ones. Tell them what your plans are and why you want to make this change. The original copy should be kept in sight as much as possible. It will be viewed first thing every morning, and right before going to bed.

Achieving your goals shouldn’t be a chore, it should be exciting and you’ll see that stepping out of your comfort zone is not that bad, and will lead to changes you’ve only ever dreamed of.
