Self-care. It’s a buzzword these days, but what does it actually mean?

Well, it could mean a lot of things, and generally, it’s different for you than it is for the next person, but the concept is the same. Hell, it could be something different for you day to day. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It can, and should, be fun most of the time.

Here Are 20 Self-Care Tips to Get You Through 2019:

  1. Go with the Flow and Plan Nothing.

Do whatever you feel. I recommend using the Groupon app if you feel like doing something fun and cheap on the fly.

  1. Recreate Your Hand at a Family Favorite Dish.

Be inventive, cook something new!

  1. Adorn Yourself in Sexy Lingerie.

You don’t have to have a partner for this, you just have to pick something you feel good in, and then dance to your favorite music.

  1. Do Something You Loved As A Kid.

Break out some Lego (they have pretty advanced ones now). Color. Go outside in nature, plant something (perhaps signifying a new year, new growth), run around in your underwear…I don’t know. What did you like to do as a kid? Do that.

  1. Have A “Me” Day.

Whatever this means to you. Get some renewal and rejuvenation in the new year. Mine would be: wake up with no alarm and let my body do it on its own, cuddle with my husband and my puppy, get a massage, go to yoga, get or make myself some yummy, nourishing food, spend some time in nature and then do something productive like put the laundry in the washer. Yours might include a bubble bath, wine, candles, or music.

  1. Spend Time with Family.

The ones you were born into or the ones you’ve created over the years, whoever is the most fun to be around. Walk the dog, take the kids to an indoor or outdoor amusement park, an interactive show like a murder mystery dinner, escape room, movie, etc.

  1. Consider Trying Out One of the “Fads.”

  1. Take $20 to a Thrift Shop.

Visit a store in a wealthy area and go crazy! Try on outlandish things and take pictures. Laugh a lot.

  1. Have A Spa Day.

“Polish” is a local nail bar that serves adult beverages, you can get foot reflexology, and a massage. See if you have something similar in your area.

  1. Create A List of Non-Food Rewards.

For those times your brain is making that excuse that “there’s no such thing as a non-food reward so I might as well have this piece of cake.”

  1. Write Your Memoir.

  1. Do Something Simple Just for You.

You could try something like drinking a cup of tea or coffee brewed your favorite way, get a manicure or pedicure, braid your hair, or try a new style: Check out YouTube for great tutorials.

  1. Stimulate Your Mind.

Do a crossword puzzle, read a good book.

  1. Take A Nap.

Simply because you feel tired. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to bed in a few hours. Listen to and respect your body’s natural cues.

  1. Show Your Body Some Love.

Take a walk, stretch while watching TV.

  1. Create.

Create one of the million things you’ve pinned on Pinterest but have never attempted.

  1. Do Something Random.

  1. Regularly Connect with Friends.

You can take walks, run errands together, or even try babysitting together.

  1. Buy Yourself Something.

Buy yourself something. Even something simple like flowers.

  1. Do Some Deep Breathing.

Google some simple techniques that you can do anywhere like three-part breath, belly breath, yogic breath, alternate nostril breathing, extending exhales.

  1. Listen to Your Favorite Song.

Try listening to your favorite song in a mindful way. Close your eyes, listen to all the parts of the music, sway if it feels good and right.

  1. Give 3 Genuine Compliments to People You Don’t Know.

I recommend the cashier who doesn’t look up and is just going through the motions. Surprise them! This act of kindness will not only make the other person feel good, but you as well.

  1. Look at Old Photos.

Revisit old pictures. I bet you’ll chuckle.

  1. Do Something that Makes You Laugh.

Search for funny videos and memes on the internet or attend a comedy show.

  1. Take A Pledge.

Google “My Pledge to Love Myself,” and see what comes up.
