You have probably noticed that the world as we knew it five years ago has changed dramatically.
And the world as we knew it from this time last year has morphed into yet another place. It looks like we are truly living out that reputed Chinese curse, May you live in interesting times. So why is that expression known as a curse? Think about it. Consider the upheaval and drama in our world. Interesting times? Absolutely. Stressful times? You betcha. When boring looks good, we have some insight into why interesting times might be considered more curse than a blessing.
It’s all a matter of perspective, isn’t it?
Interesting is a great word to use as it is so flexible in similarity to its definition.
When described as a curse, interesting sounds like something undesirable. And that certainly is one way to look at what is happening on our planet right now. There is an alternative. We can change our definition of the word. Interesting can also mean fascinating, attractive, appealing, out of the ordinary and remarkable. How we define interesting is up to us.
We may also choose how to define our perception of what is going on in the world. We are all part of a huge shift in consciousness. We have the right to choose how we engage with what is unfolding in our lives. Yes, there are big nasty problems being revealed every day. No question, there are horrible and terrifying things going on. If we watch the news, we are inundated with more information than we can process every single day about injustice, cruelty, and violence. Sometimes it seems overwhelming. What can we do?
There are a few things each one of us can do, beginning with these 3 tips for living through interesting times:
-
We can first decide to not feed into the negativity.
That means that instead of letting thoughts and feelings dwell upon what\’s wrong, stop and send prayers and loving feelings to the people who are involved in the situation. That may sound simplistic, but there have been countless studies that show that in dire medical circumstances, the power of prayer, meditation or whatever you call it, has a positive impact on the patient. According to one study by Dr. Claude Swanson, the time during the day when people are most receptive to receiving prayer is between 1:30 and 2:00 pm in their time zone. When we expand our view to include negative situations and the living beings involved in them as the \’patient\’, then we can directly participate in the healing of that patient, that event, that circumstance.
-
Secondly, we can be selective in our diets, and not just our food.
An interesting diet has variety. Be conscious of how much and what kind of news gets taken into your system. Perhaps limit news to certain times daily rather than receiving a constant barrage. That’s gorging! You wouldn’t do it with food; don’t do it with current events, politics, or other emotional input.
These interesting times involve many interactions with others, often through social media. Much good has been done already in these past few years by those of us serving to promote the world we want to live in via social media. There are many of us who are becoming more aware that we are the ones who can make this world a better place. We need to find people who can be interested in interesting times, and how we can change them to better serve our vision.
-
The third tip is to designate specific moments to unplug from the virtual world.
Maximize these interesting times and “unplug.” Turn off the cell and computer. Go out to engage people and nature up close and in person. Smell the flowers. Hug a real person with an open heart. Become engrossed in a project that helps make the planet a better place to live.
Some people are mobilizing. If that calls to you, go for it! There is also power in stillness, waiting to move until the time feels just perfect. Letting our hearts guide our behavior creates a different world than one where the monkey mind is in charge. Even in these times, there is so much to be grateful for, and so much to appreciate.
Balance the interesting with gratitude. Hold within, and without, the vision of our world as you are divinely inspired to create it. We have much more power than we think we do, over our internal landscape and our external world.
We live in interesting times, don’t we? Isn’t that awesome?
