Mindful eating is the process of paying close attention to your eating habits and the needs of your body.

But sometimes, health is not so much about what you eat, but how you eat. And more importantly, what’s the difference between a diet and a lifestyle?

It’s ok to break the rules sometimes and indulge in your favorite foods. In fact, without these things, a diet can end up feeling like an endless chore. In my opinion, still allowing yourself foods that make you happy every now and again (no matter how sugary or salty) is key to maintaining motivation.

  1. Eat Slowly:

Take the time to really enjoy what you’re eating and the process of preparing it. Eating without pleasure is a waste of time, and usually leads to binge eating. It takes 40 minutes for your body to send a signal to your brain that you are full. And so, by eating slower and taking the time to enjoy your food, you end up eating less but feeling fuller!

  1. Give 3–4 Hours in Between Every Meal:

By giving a couple hours between every meal, this ensures that you aren’t overeating or skipping meals. Keeping a schedule of when you eat regulates your metabolism and blood sugar levels. Having these two things in good order results in a life of more energy and productivity.

  1. Eat Slightly Smaller Portion Sizes:

You don’t have to cut your meal sizes in half or even buy smaller plates. The most important thing is to just be aware of how much you are eating and often ask yourself “Would eating a little less satisfy me just as much?”. You might be surprised as to how often the answer to this question is yes. The key here is to not restrict yourself, but instead pay attention and monitor.

  1. Drink a lot of Water:

Water is a natural appetite suppressant. By aiming for at least 2 liters of water a day, you’ll never be dehydrated and get rid of those nasty headaches. It helps to have a one-liter drink bottle to always keep with you at your work desk or around the house. Drinking water before and after your meals also helps you to eat less and feel fuller for longer.

By following these tips as a daily routine, you can ensure yourself a healthier and happier lifestyle without restrictions or guilt. But does this involve dieting? The simple answer is no. The biggest difference between a diet and a lifestyle is you, and your perception of what these two things below mean in your personal life:

  • A diet sounds like a chore and a forced effort. In general, it’s something you’d rather not do but you have to. A diet very easily becomes a self-punishment for not being the desired weight, size, or shape.
  • A lifestyle is how you live every day. It’s a routine on how you chose to live. Sometimes it gets tiring, but it’s worth it because it’s the life you have paved for yourself. Career, food choices, friendships, goals, and aspirations all come under lifestyle.

So, instead of living every day on a “diet,” live every day to your fullest, whilst having the deepest understanding of your needs and who you are. With these keys in mind, the most important goal is not to lose weight. The goal that should first come to mind is to live the healthiest life you can. And there’s no way of losing at that.
