Highly sensitive people tend to perceive and process the world at a deeper level.

They are often labeled as shy or overdramatic. They are neither shy or overdramatic they are tuned into the environment. It’s part of the nature of a highly sensitive person.

Has anyone ever told you that you are oversensitive? A Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) refers to people with the personality trait of Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) and is believed to affect up to 20 percent of the population.

The SPS trait is described to be “a greater sensitivity and responsiveness to the environment and social stimuli.” It’s important to understand this is not a personality condition or disorder. For some HSP’s it can be extremely difficult to handle the overstimulation. A deeper understanding of HSP can be helpful if you are an HSP or know someone that it.

How to Go with The Flow as a Highly Sensitive Person —

There are strategies one can follow to remain in balance and go the flow of being an HSP. It can also be helpful for anyone that is looking to add balance to their life.

The nature of an HSP is very open, they tend to let a lot of stuff in. It’s important for an HSP to find practices that are grounding. This will help them find their balance and sense of self. These methods should be a part of your daily routine.

  1. Eat Grounding Foods –

Eat foods that are grown in the ground such as sweet potatoes, root vegetables, and squash. Try to consume foods that are rich in minerals such as leafy greens and nuts. Eat foods high in magnesium and iron as they rebalance the body, balance blood sugar levels, regulate your body’s fluid and aid healing.

  1. Energy Clearing

Clear energy in your home or workspace! The best known is to burn or smudge with white sage. Palo Santo or holy wood can be used as well. Hematite, Smoky Quartz, and Jasper are grounding crystals. You can have them in your home or carry around with you.

  1. Get Outside in Nature

A walk outside to get fresh air is a great way of grounding yourself. If you don’t have time for that, putting your bare-feet in the grass for a couple of minutes works great.

  1. Let Nature In

A great way to do this is open doors or windows and get fresh air flowing through your home. This resets the energy in the space as neutral. Having plants is also a common way to bring nature into your home, as plants purify the air.

  1. Water

Water is known to be the best healer. It does many things, such as hydrating your cells, increase circulation and remove toxins from the body. Taking a bath with Epson Salts is a great way to calm your body down from a long day.

Drinking plenty of water is a must for HSP’s. There are so many energy shifts and movements in the body in just one day (especially for HSP’s), which can dehydrate the body. Hydrating is so important to keep your body in balance.

  1. Relax Your Breathing

Connecting with your breath is a great way to ground yourself. Learning breathing techniques, such as extending your inhale and exhale by counting to four is a great way to slow down your breathing. This will help you reset and regulate your nervous system and create a sense of calm.

Setting and Holding Boundaries —

Setting healthy boundaries allows HSP’s to be their best-self which helps them and those around them.

  1. Saying No

Being able to do this is an important part of establishing healthy boundaries. Be clear on what not to do or where not to go.

  1. Protecting Physical Space

Life is hectic and full of events and time spent with others which can be draining. It is important for a person with HSP to ensure they have a place and space just for them. It can be anything from a room, yoga mat, chair, anywhere! This is a place to retreat and feel centered.

  1. Limiting Time with Specific Individuals

There are people in your life that can be draining at times. These people can even be friends and loved ones. Learn to leave when needed, switch off your phone, and take some time for yourself.

  1. Living in Line with Natural Energy

Choose places and spaces with natural light and make sure to go outdoors daily.
