“Success leaves clues,” says Tony Robbins. If you look at the wisdom shared by many successful leaders, they all emphasize the importance of following the footsteps left by leaders before them. However, when you see a group of people read the same book, attend the same seminar, or take the same course, why do some people succeed more than others? The reason is mindset and habits. So, what are the eight habits of highly successful people that could completely transform your life when you start embodying them, starting today? Take a look at the clues that the masters have left behind.
Here Are 8 Habits of Highly Successful People:
-
Dream Big
Richard Branson tweeted, “Dream big and you will be presented with the opportunity to lead the world on an incredible adventure.” Successful people are big dreamers, motivated to take action on their dreams.
In a recent interview I did on our Rise and Be Rich Podcast Show, we talked to a coach of coaches on the importance of abundant thinking. The only way to exponentially grow in business is to adopt the habit of abundant or big thinking. If you don\’t think big, you cannot reach a bigger solution. For example, if you ask in your business, how can I get 20 clients this year? Solutions will present themselves to solve that problem. But what happens when you ask, how can I enroll 200 clients in my programs this year? The solutions that present themselves will propel that exponential growth.
What big questions can you ask that could exponentially grow your life, career, or business?
-
Results-Oriented
Brian Tracy says, “All really successful people are intensely result-oriented.” It\’s the same when Steven Covey writes in his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, “Begin with the end in mind.”
Have you ever come across people who look at someone who is focused on their goals and motivated by results and say, “They are too ambitious!” Somehow a go-getter attitude is perceived as negative by many people. However, when you are results-oriented, two magical things happen:
- You have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, which speeds up the journey.
- When you have a roadmap to your destination, it’s easy to learn what’s necessary to reach your goals, prioritise your tasks, and take focused aligned action.
-
Create, Don’t Complain
How many people do you know who are stuck in their challenges and keep complaining about it? Here\’s how Elon Musk thinks about complaints, “Complaints are a sign that there is a problem to be solved.”
Whenever there is a problem, there is an opportunity. If we train our brains to shift focus from complaint to creativity, from the problem to the solution, we can harness that opportunity and create something meaningful that could benefit everyone, including you.
-
Give Credit
Successful leaders are always learning. Sometimes they learn from books, at other times, they learn from people. These people could be mentors, peers, or even their employees. These also could be people in their lives who have challenged them the most. Whoever it may be, leaders give credit where credit is due because that is their nature. It is a habit. This is why they are the best people to lead other people.
When asked to name some of the best business decisions that he had ever taken, Bill Gates said, “I\’d say my best business decisions really have to do with picking people.” You cannot grow in a vacuum, real growth is a collaborative journey. When you shift out of “Me” thinking into “We” thinking and appreciate the people around you, you create a habit of success.
-
Don’t Be Afraid to Fail
Arianna Huffington mentions that her mother always said, “Failure isn\’t the opposite of success, it\’s a steppingstone.” Everyone faces fears and doubts. It is the same for successful people as for those who are beginning their journey. However, Huffington says, “fearlessness is not an absence of fear, but a mastery of it.”
How do you start to master fear? I have been fortunate to ask this question to several leaders in business and they have all pointed to one direction, go within, connect with yourself, see what truly resonates and if it is what your heart really wants, don’t wait for the fear to be gone, make your move and break through, one step at a time.
-
Listen and Communicate Better
Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People talks about this habit, “Seek first to understand, then be understood.” Communication is important in every relationship, whether in life, career, or business. If you are in business, you have to understand your audience in order to communicate effectively with them through your marketing and promotions. Whether you are an employee or an employer, the success of your team depends on how you understand each other and communicate effectively. Your family is a team too and the same rules apply.
Successful people know that listening is a powerful skill to master. They understand that when people share opinions and perspectives, it is based on their experiences. When you put yourself in the perspective of the other person and empathically listen, communication becomes better and relationships grow stronger.
-
Be Here Now
Dan Sullivan, creator of Strategic Coach says, “Wherever you are, make sure you’re there.” The habit of presence is one of the most powerful habits of successful business owners. Most people stay caught in their past failures or their future aspirations. However, all decisions that create your future happen in the now.
When you split your focus on a multitude of areas, you cannot give your best performance. Your productivity drops. You can’t manage your time well. Chances are that you will face delay, stress, and overwhelm. Practicing presence changes that equation. When you are present, it becomes a lot easier to set boundaries, prioritise and plan, and allocate focused time to important actions and commitments.

Love What You Do – Have Fun
Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran says, “Having fun is the most underutilized tool in business today.” You attract who you are, so if you are having fun, loving your life, loving what you do, your magnetic attraction amplifies to bring in more. It brings in effortless opportunities in your life and leaders know this and live in a constant state of passion, gratitude, creativity, and fun.
