There are many triggers that can lead to thyroid problems. Toxins, especially affect the health and function of the thyroid. Below are specific situations that are helpful to be aware of so the body can be supported in healthy ways to fight back.

The meltdown in Japan that took place in 2011 has affected the United States significantly. Radioactive chemicals were released in the air and have managed to travel around the world. These chemicals have gotten into our water, air and food supply. This has caused an increase in hypothyroidism, especially in children and infants. The thyroid gland is very susceptible to radiation including radioactive iodine that when ingested, goes immediately through the bloodstream where it attacks and kills cells in the thyroid. Radiation from this disaster is a major cause for the increase in hypothyroidism, especially in children.

We are exposed to pesticides on a daily basis and there are numerous studies that link thyroid dysfunction to pesticide exposure. When your body lacks good bacteria in your gut and intestines, your body cannot produce enough digestive enzymes to properly digest your food and all of this affects your immune system. Processed foods may be quick, easy and convenient, however, they are full of artificial preservatives and additives that increase their shelf life but they do nothing for your shelf life. Additives are also added for flavor and can become quite addictive with extra fat, sugar, and salt. The problem with these additives is that they decrease your body’s ability to absorb any nutrients from the food and cause weight gain. Artificial sweeteners are just one example of chemicals that make food sweeter without the extra calories of sugar, however, they have been shown to promote hunger.


The brain registers it received something sweet, but the stomach says, “Where is it?” They create cravings for more sweet foods or sugar, leading to increased hunger. Your body is simply not getting the nutrients it needs so it is hungry all the time. They can also interfere with your body’s system of signaling to other systems, including nerve cells. Stay away from foods with artificial sweeteners, additives, and preservatives.

They pump out the stress hormone cortisol, disturbing your body’s natural balance. Stress affects your body in so many ways including:
