As we grow up, many of us are given the message that we can do whatever we want to do. This kind of message usually comes from well-meaning parents or other adults in our lives who are trying in their own way to encourage us to be the best that we can be. On one level, I believe the statement is totally true, but evidence and experience don’t completely support the idea.
You see, as a child, you may have believed that you could do whatever you wanted to do. Maybe you had dreams of being a super-hero, or perhaps you were more “realistic” and dreamed instead of being a brain surgeon or a space explorer or a ballet dancer. Almost every person I’ve ever gotten to know has shared with me childhood dreams of this type. And yet, what often seems to happen is that people end up going about living life according to the dictates of our culture; very few of them actually fulfill the dreams of their childhood. Why does this seem to happen so often?
