The words we think about ourselves matter. The words we write about ourselves matter. The words we say about ourselves matter. When we participate in negative self-talk, we are sending the message to the Universe, that we do not like ourselves, that we are not worthy of all the goodness we seek, or that we don’t deserve to realize our dreams. Now if you are like me then you have some big dreams you would like to accomplish for yourself, but you keep getting in your way. I would write down goals and then convince myself I could not achieve them. It wasn’t until I changed my belief and started talking to myself in a more positive way that I saw some real success.
The first step is to retrain your brain to think more positive thoughts. Think about what you would say to your friend if they told you about a new goal or dream they were pursuing. Think about how you compliment your friends, your family, or your coworkers. What are the kind words you say to others that you can say to yourself? Be as specific as possible because this is the way you will start to think about yourself. Instead of “I’m not smart enough to apply for that job” think “I have all the skills needed to do that job.”
When we think our affirmations, they stay only in our head, but writing them down means you are making a commitment to yourself. Writing down your affirmations makes them true for you. Get a journal or use post-it notes, whichever works best for you, and make a list of all the positive affirmations you just thought in your head. These can change over time, so practice writing them every week or once a month or any time a new one pops in your head. Here are a few good ones to start your list:
- “I am enough”
- “I am brilliant and beautiful”
- “I am smart and sophisticated”
- “I deserve love”
- “I have everything I need”
- “I am a strong leader”
The most important part of this process is to say these affirmations aloud, say them to yourself until you retrain your brain to believe them. Take out your journal and read those affirmations aloud every night before bed. This way those words are seeping into your subconscious as you sleep. Put your affirmation post-its all around your home so when you stumble on one, you read it aloud. Say them to yourself when you are driving to work, say them as you cook dinner, say them under your breath in line at the grocery store (don’t worry about talking to yourself in public, I do it all the time), say them to yourself several times a week. But whatever you do, do not stop saying them. Say them until you mean it!
This all may seem foolish at first and it might seem difficult to say these kind words to yourself. After all, we are wired to think negatively about ourselves. But trust me, it works. The more positively you speak, the more you believe it. Once you believe it and know your true potential, the more you will accomplish.
We really can live our best lives; it just takes practice and a little affirmation success.
