A Conversation with Karen Cherrett; Transformational Coach

The Wellness Universe directory is a resource and community filled with Change-Makers, we call WU World Changers (Wellness Universe World Changers). Today we want to introduce you to WU World Changer Karen Cherrett, a Transformational Coach.

  1. Hello Karen, will you please tell us about yourself?

Hello, I’m an Australian, or Aussie as we love to be called, who now calls Denver, Colorado home. I spent 25 plus years working in the corporate environment, in a box, and in 2015, I realized that it wasn’t what worked for me anymore.

I had already started on my path of changing my life by exploring self-inquiry and it was after two years of questioning my whole ‘work-life’ experience that I said to my workplace at that time, ‘Thank You for all you’ve shown me, and I’m leaving!” My boss was flabbergasted, to say the least.

I, on the other hand, felt free for the first time in my life. Free to choose what I wanted to do and how.  Free to do something that I was passionate about, not following someone else’s rules. My life was built on following the rules.

  1. Karen, what is it that inspires you?

What inspires me is working with people who are willing and open to making a change in their life. They inspire me because they go through hardship to work through all of the things that make them unhappy, suicidal, anxious and depressed.

I am inspired by the Universe\’s way of bringing me experiences so I can learn. I\’m learning to look at my own thinking and belief patterns.

  1. Will you please tell us what you call yourself and explain what it is that you do?

Firstly, I struggle with labels. I see them as defining me and putting me in a box. One that you have a concept of. If I told you I was a Life Coach, you would have your own concept of what that was, and I’m not that. If I said I was a Counselor, you would also have a concept of what I would do too, and I am not just that.

I think at the moment I am calling myself a ‘Transformational Coach,\’ because I support people through a combination of Holistic Counseling and Coaching using Self Inquiry to transform their lives.

I work with people to question their thinking and beliefs in order to find peace with the world, whether that is in their relationships, life in general, their workplace; any situation really.

  1. How exactly does that help someone?

We get caught in a world of belief. From a small child, we watched our parents who had beliefs about how life was, how it should be, and how they wanted it to be. This leads us to create a story of who we THINK we are.

That story is not always true, and yet, we don’t know that until we begin to question it. Questioning your beliefs helps you see a different perspective of life, or a specific situation. You might see that what you thought was true, actually isn’t at all. By questioning your thinking, you meet yourself in a kinder and more loving place.

It supports you to drop your over critical self-talk, to meet others from a place of kindness and understanding. Self-Inquiry basically ends suffering.

  1. Why are you so passionate about helping people end their internal suffering?

From my own experience, I’ve found it changes my whole outlook on life. You can live a life that is stress-free, all of the time. You are able to be fully present in any experience and get the most out of it, whether that’s hearing the waves tumble on the beach, or being in a crowded shopping mall listening to the noise.

We don’t need to suffer through life. That’s not why we’re here. There is an easier way, and it is as simple as questioning what we are thinking at any given point in time.

  1. Did any specific life experience prompt you to follow this path?

Yes. My only daughter died suddenly in 2010. After I spent several months grieving, I felt that I wanted to learn something more. I started learning Shiatsu, and through doing that, I fell into the Holistic Counseling Course. It was there that I learned about this method called ‘The Work of Byron Katie.’ It blew my mind.

It if hadn’t been for my daughter dying, I wouldn’t be on this path now, so I am so grateful for the whole experience.

  1. How long have you been doing this?

I’ve been using Self-Inquiry since 2011, so 8 years. Working with others as a job only started in 2015, after I had gone through thousands of hours of my own work in order to become a Certified Facilitator of the process.

  1. Will you share a story of how you have made a difference in someone’s life?

I was working with a young man who was at the point of feeling that life was hopeless and perhaps he’d rather not be here. He didn’t see any possibilities as we began working together. I supported him daily, and in crisis situations when all he wanted to do was crawl up in a ball and die. And one day, I asked him why things felt so bad and he explained that what he really wanted was to go home to visit his family.  He was living in Australia and not from there. I offered him some possibilities on how he could keep his job, catch up with his friends, AND go home to spend time with his family.

That completely changed his world. Seeing the possibilities had him go home and begin to ask if what we’d talked about was possible. It was and he is now living a very happy joy-filled life back in Australia.

  1. What’s next on the horizon for you?

Doing more online group work in the areas of parenting and anxiety, as well as for those suffering from Fibromyalgia. I think there is a link between the symptoms of this disease and thought patterns and I want to work with people to see if that is the case. I also plan on running in-person workshops here in Denver.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing today, Karen! Do you have any final thoughts?

I don’t think any of us realize how much our thoughts, or thinking, impacts how we live our life. And that by questioning our thoughts, we create a whole shift in our ability to live life the way we were meant to… full of love and joy.
