Essential Oils for Everyday Living – Essential Oils that Offer Emotional and Cognitive Support –

In a scientific review published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, researchers found that because essential oils possess potent antioxidants that work to inhibit free radical scavenging, this means they help to support our brain function and emotional well-being, naturally.

This research highlighted several different essential oils that have shown promise in cognitive and emotional support. I have posted a few of my favorites below.

  1. Focus and Cognitive Support:

Basil Essential Oil:

Traditionally basil essential oils have been used to combat inattention and improve recall. Inhalation has shown promise in driving up focus and strengthen your mental muscles.

Sage Essential Oil:

Has been used for centuries to support memory and cognitive function. Part of the reason is that sage has been shown to enhance acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter substance involved in the signal transferring between the synapses. Acetylcholine is one of the body’s most important neurotransmitters, which are chemicals used to transmit signals from one cell to another.

Rosemary Essential Oil:

A study was performed with 53 students who were between the age of 13 and 15 years old. Researchers found that their memory of images and numbers improved when the essential oil of rosemary was diffused in the room.

Melissa Essential Oil:

Studies showed that the traditional relaxing effects of Melissa may be linked to elevated levels of the neurotransmitter GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) reported in Cognitive Health Magazine. What is GABA? GABA contributes to motor control, vision, and many other cortical functions. It also regulates anxiety.

Here is my go-to diffuser blend to help me with focus and attention.

Laser-Like Focus:
  • 8 drops of Peppermint
  • 7 drops of Eucalyptus
  • 7 drops of Rosemary
  • 5 drops of Lavender
  1. Spiritual Connection and Grounding:

Cardamom Essential Oil:

Facilitates letting go of fears, worries, and burdens. (blends well with bergamot, black pepper, caraway, cedarwood, cinnamon, clove, and petitgrain)

Idaho Blue Spruce Essential Oil:

Grounding allows a deeper connection to self and provides a calming sense of security. (blends well with vetiver, frankincense, lavender, and geranium)

Palmarosa Essential Oil:

Soothing calming both the body and mind providing balance. (blends well with neroli, sandalwood, cedarwood, ginger, and bergamot)

Neroli Essential Oil:

Encourages self-reflection, peace, calming, more profound connection with spirit. (blends well with Roman chamomile, mandarin, Melissa, rose and grapefruit)

Palo Santo Essential Oil:

Because of its grounding nature, this is a great essential oil to use before a significant life event or test to get you back to your center. Also supports turning our bodies natural relaxation response. (blends well with Black pepper, cedarwood, clary sage, cypress, frankincense, lemon balm, myrrh, rose, sandalwood, & vetiver)

Here is diffuser blend that I recommend when you’re wanting to slow down and find your center.

Finding Inner Peace:
  • 8 drops of Bergamot
  • 6 drops of Frankincense
  • 3 drops of Vetiver
  • 1 drop of Sandalwood
  1. Boost Your Mood and Serotonin Levels:

Bergamot Essential Oil:

Has shown in may raise serotonin levels and ease depression symptoms (blends well with black pepper, clary sage, cypress, frankincense, geranium, helichrysum, jasmine, lavender, rosemary, sandalwood & vetiver)

Ginger Essential Oil:

Has shown in studies that it may regulate our serotonin levels. It supports digestive function and allowing for healthy gut function (blends well with bergamot, cedarwood, clove, coriander, eucalyptus, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, jasmine, juniper, lemon, lime, mandarin, neroli, orange, palmarosa, patchouli, and rose)

Lavender Essential Oil:

Is known to increase serotonin levels and support the nervous system.(blends well with black pepper, cedarwood, chamomile, clary sage, clove, cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, grapefruit, juniper, lemon, lemongrass, mandarin, marjoram, oakmoss, palmarosa, patchouli, peppermint, pine, ravensara, rose, rosemary, tea tree, and thyme.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil:

Has shown it can ease digestive storms and support balanced well-being. (blends well with clary sage, eucalyptus, geranium, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, lemon, neroli, oakmoss, palmarosa, rose & tea tree.

Orange Essential Oil:

Supports mood balance and raising serotonin levels as well as other mood neurotransmitters. (blends well with coriander, eucalyptus, frankincense, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, jasmine, juniper, lavender, lemon, marjoram, myrrh, neroli, nutmeg, patchouli, petitgrain, rose, sandalwood, vetiver, and ylang-ylang.

Clary Sage Essential Oil:

Research has shown it too can increase serotonin levels while supporting lowering stress hormones.

Next, is my favorite blend to diffuse if am in a funk.

A Burst of Happy:
  • 16 drops of Bergamot
  • 10 drops of Lemon
  • 10 drops of Grapefruit
  • 6 drops of Orange
  • 4 drops of Lime
  • 2 drops of Neroli

I encourage to experiment with essential oils and find the oils that you feel drawn to add to your emotional support toolkit.
