Welcome to this month’s installment of the Essential Oils for Everyday Living Series! Each month, WU World Changer Andrea Warren will share new tips to teach you how to include essential oils in your everyday life!
Can We Ingest Essential Oils?
One of the most frequent questions I am asked about essential oils is “Are they safe to ingest?” and “Is it effective?” To both questions, I would answer yes, but I would also say proceed with caution. Not all essential oils should be ingested, and you should know the source of the essential oil before you swallow it. A few more questions you need to ask yourself before ingesting an EO are: How does my body metabolize essential oils? Do I have any known allergies to essential oils? By answering these questions, you should be able to deduce which essential oils are safe for you to ingest. If you’re still unclear consult, the GRAS list put out by the FDA; I find this to be an extremely helpful resource.
Some Additional Background:
I know there is a ton of debate on ingesting essential oils and on any given day you could read several articles with entirely different points of view. I take my frame of reference from my instructor Sylla Sheppard-Hanger, founder of Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy the oldest run Aromatherapy school in the country. Sylla has developed an entire curriculum covering how to safely ingest essential oils and the benefits. So, with that being said I am more than comfortable telling my clients that they can ingest essential oils; but I would not do so without consulting a professional first.
How to Get Started:
After you have gotten the all clear and you’re ready to start ingesting essential oils I go back to my favorite saying, “use the less is more approach.” Essential oils are extremely concentrated, and ONE DROP goes a long way. I can’t say this enough above all, always use 100% pure, high-quality essential oils from a trusted source.
Now, it’s time to choose which way you would prefer to ingest essential oils. Here are a few suggestions:
- Capsule Form:
This is the most popular form of ingesting oils. I think most people prefer this because it limits the taste of the essential oil. You can find vegetable gelatin capsules just about anywhere these days ( I usually grab a bag from Amazon). By adding a one to two drops of food grade essential oils to the capsule you can quickly support digestion, the immune system, gut health and more.
- Coconut Oil:
I love administering essential oils with coconut oil. I usually make a blend of some kind; I mix the oils thoroughly in the coconut oil and take it down. Frankincense and Thieves are two of my favorites to ingest using coconut oil; for a little extra kick, I either add a drop of Lemon Essential or Grapefruit Essential oil. This blend supports a healthy immune system, supports a healthy weight, balance, and mood.
This is my kid’s favorite way to take oils. When choosing your honey, you should be just as selective as you were when you decided on your brand of essential oils. Honey contains nutrients and enzymes that have a variety of health benefits, and it’s loaded Phytonutrients. So why not kick it up the health benefits and add a few of your favorite essential oils. My daughter is a singer, and she loves to take a tablespoon of Raw honey and combine a drop of Lemon EO & Clove EO both of which soothe her throat after a long day in the studio.
- Cooking with Essential Oils:
I highly recommend cooking with essential oils, it makes food so much more flavorful. Here again a little goes a long way. ( I learned that the hard way when I added little too much ginger essential oil to a stir-fry dish) I have also made some incredible marinades with olive oil, fresh garlic and a blend of oregano, basil & thyme essential oil. ( I always add a drop of some sort of citrus oil too) To support my sleep especially this time of year when the nights are getting cooler, I end the day with a cup of dark chocolate hot cocoa with a hint of lavender essential oil. So next you’re in the kitchen don’t grab the lemon zester grab your lemon essential oil instead.

Safely using and storing essential oils is extremely important. Here are a few tips:
- If an essential oil is found cosmetic products, apply as instructed in the label directions. Stop using it immediately if a rash or other skin irritations occur and gently wash it off with cool water, DO NOT use hot water it will open your pores allowing the essential oil to be absorbed faster.
- If your using an essential oil infused over the counter product, use it according to label instructions ONLY.
- If you have young children I highly recommend locking your essential oils in a safe place, this will ensure your children and pets will not be able to get into them.
- Not ALL oils that are safe for ingestion I recommend looking at the GRAS list. I suggest that you use this list as a point of reference about what is and what is not safe because it all comes down to dosage.
- Check with a professional before using essential oils if you ‘re on any medications
