With the start of long-overcast days and frigid temperatures, many of us experience the winter blues.

They are extremely common and often cause us to feel depressed, fatigued, short-tempered, and even anti-social. Below, I will share a few of my favorite essential oils (EO) and additional tips that will lift your spirits during those gloomy winter months.

Here Are 9 Essential Oil Blends to Beat the Winter Blues:

  1. Don’t Hide Indoors

Add a few drops of Peppermint essential oil to the bottom of your feet, get a good pair of wool socks, and get walking.

  1. Light the Sunshine In

metaphorically, of course. Light therapy is an easy way to bring full-spectrum light in even on those dark days. Light therapy mimics the sun’s natural rays and tricks our brain into thinking we are getting a dose of the real thing.

  1. A Ray of Light

Grab your essential oil diffuser add 10 drops of Lemon EO, 10 drops of Orange EO, 10 drops of Tangerine EO and 8 drops of Grapefruit EO.

  1. Increase Your Vitamin D3

Since we aren’t getting much sun exposure during the winter months, it’s a good idea to get your vitamin D levels checked.

  1. Eat the Rainbow

Colorful fruits and vegetables are loaded with phytochemicals that increase energy, combat fatigue, increase healthy microbiomes that boost serotoninF and improve our immune system.

  1. When it Gets Dark

For some, the winter blues can become unbearable and cause us to retract from the world. This is an excellent time to reach out to a professional or an alternative healer. I have found energy work and EFT to be helpful techniques to ease my winter blues.

  1. Brighten Your Day

Grab your favorite herbal tea bag and a couple of drops of Lemon EO. Lemon EO has shown that it can boost our mood and increase mental clarity.

  1. Start in the Shower

Before you even walk out the door, you can raise your spirits while you take your morning shower. Add a few drops of Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Bergamot EO to a washcloth and drop it in the shower. As the warm water hits the cloth, breathe in its uplifting essence.

  1. Get Social

Being around others can instantly raise our spirits. Grab a cup of coffee or see a movie with a friend. If you’re not feeling up to it, I recommend adding in some liquid courage, and I don’t mean a shot of vodka. Take equal parts (I usually add 3 drops of each) Cedarwood EO, Lavender EO, Patchouli EO, and Frankincense EO to the bottom of your feet.

While there are many ways to combat the winter blues, if you’re unable to beat them on your own, please ask someone to help you.
