Goal Setting for Happiness

Welcome to the 26 Days of Happiness! Today is day 22. Please meet featured author Melissa Jirovec from the soon to be released book: The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care, 25 Tools for Happiness, sharing their inspiring story!

Did you know that you are a co-creator of your reality? Your circumstances come from two factors, the events out of your control and your response. In a time where out-of-control circumstances are being emphasized and broadcasted more than ever, here\’s what you can and cannot control. 

Out of your control:

  • Other people (their selected perspectives, their decisions, their actions)
  • The Past
  • Certain life events (pandemics, deaths, natural disasters, etc.)
  • The weather
  • Change (inevitable)
  • Traffic
  • The passing of time (it will pass, no matter how we utilize it)
  • Your mortality

Within your control:

  • Your thoughts
  • Your feelings
  • Your beliefs and priorities
  • Your decisions
  • Your actions 
  • Your attitude
  • Your habits

If you are habitually focusing on things you can\’t control, then you are giving away your power to co-create your life.


Whatever life throws at you, you always have control through your response by utilizing your thoughts to create your feelings and choose your attitude. These will ultimately determine your priorities, decisions, actions, and results.

And your results are very telling. 

It is not what happens to you in life that determines your future, but your response to what happens. You’ll find that you can look at two people who experienced a similar event but emerged with two vastly different perspectives. Those two people will likely end up with drastically different outcomes. 

We often react to what we can\’t control like an obstacle blocking our path and preventing us from moving forward. We blame that event for not being where we want to be. But you see, that is the point where we need to start taking action. The snowstorm has ended, and now you have to go out and shovel! Once the uncontrollable has happened, it is time to accept, reflect, and respond. 

If you want to live a life of happiness and freedom, you have to set goals to move forward!

Think of yourself as an architect. You are building yourself a life that is ideal and free. You have to identify what that looks like! You have to create a vision and a plan to move towards where you want to be. And once you\’ve created the blueprint, you must get to work!

  • At times you will have to halt construction.  
  • At times you’ll find yourself needing to step back and rest. 
  • At times you\’ll have to take a calculated risk and push through fear.
  • At times you’ll have to look over that blueprint to remind yourself where you’re headed and why. 

But the end goal stays the same, only the plan changes. 

The Plan

The plan must be flexible and adaptable. Life will come in and surprise you but regardless, you are still moving forward. Goal setting keeps you on track to creating the life you want to live. 

Your ideal life will not be handed to you, and it won\’t come from luck or hoping. Above all, you must not live a life determined by circumstance. You will never move forward that way, and you certainly won\’t be free. 

You can choose to be free by recognizing where your control lies and developing the habits that will enable you to fully utilize that control. As you do this, you\’ll find that your world suddenly becomes full of possibilities, opportunities, and open doors. And you are worthy and deserving of all of it.
