The Wellness Universe (WU): Hello Marisa, please tell us about yourself and what inspired you to write your chapter in the book The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care: 25 Tools For Transformation.

Marisa Ferrera (MF): For much of my early life, I kept myself small and quiet, always trying to avoid conflict and make others happy. I didn’t know how to set healthy boundaries, and I often ignored my own needs just to keep the peace. Over time, I realized that this way of living was slowly draining my joy and dimming my light.

That realization became a turning point for me. I made a commitment to do the inner work needed to rediscover who I truly am and to learn how to speak my truth with confidence and grace. Through that journey, I began creating relationships that felt more loving, respectful, and aligned with my values—and a life that feels deeply fulfilling.

One of the most profound shifts came through healing from my traumatic past and transforming my relationship with my father. This experience showed me what’s truly possible when we choose to do the inner work, and it deepened my belief that others can experience this kind of transformation too. That’s what inspired me to write my chapter.

I want to support those who feel stuck in painful family dynamics to know that healing is possible. You don’t have to stay trapped in old patterns. When we begin to shift within, our outer world begins to transform too. I wrote this chapter as a heartfelt invitation to anyone who’s ready to break free from the past and create the loving, authentic connections they desire and deserve.

WU: What tool do you share in this book, and what can we expect to experience as a result of using this tool? 

MF: In my chapter, I offer a guided journal practice designed to help you gently explore and release emotional wounds from the past—especially those rooted in challenging family dynamics. This reflective process invites you to bring compassion, honesty, and curiosity to experiences that may still be holding power over your voice and your ability to set healthy boundaries.

Rather than simply revisiting painful memories, this tool supports you in shifting how you relate to them. It creates space for new insights, healing perspectives, and, ultimately, a sense of inner freedom. You’ll begin to untangle limiting beliefs, reconnect with your truth, and remember the strength that has always lived within you.

As a result, many who engage with this practice find themselves feeling lighter, more empowered, and more capable of communicating their needs with confidence and grace—especially in relationships where fear or self-doubt once held them back.

WU: What’s the first step to feeling safe enough to speak your truth when you’ve spent a lifetime feeling silenced or afraid?

MF: The first step is recognizing that your voice matters—and that it’s safe to begin listening to it, even if you don’t feel ready to speak it out loud just yet. Healing doesn’t begin with confrontation or forced conversations. It begins within—with quiet reflection, compassionate self-awareness, and a willingness to rewrite the stories that made you believe your truth was too much or not enough.

That’s why the journal practice I share in my chapter is so powerful. It’s a sacred invitation to gently explore what’s been keeping you silent, to reconnect with the parts of yourself that have been hiding, and to remember your innate strength and worth. From that place, your voice begins to rise naturally—not with force, but with clarity, confidence, and love.
