Please take a moment to enjoy the IOTD for September 13th by Michelle Robin Gould and walk away feeling better and inspired.
A parent. A child. A lover. A spouse. A friend. A mentor. A coworker.
Most of us have known someone we just wanted to shake some sense into. Once we embrace a lifestyle of recovery, we have trouble accepting that not everyone gets it, and not everyone sees it the way we do. We can’t fathom why everyone wouldn’t want this freedom, this peace.
But trying to force change on others doesn’t usuallygo well. They have to be open to it. They have to want something different badly enough to work for it.
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this, working in the substance use field. Some people seek treatment because they want help. Others seek treatment because they’re court-ordered, or to have a roof over their heads, or because their loved ones staged an intervention. In my case, I went into treatment to prove that I didn’t need to be there. (Hah!)
I can tell you that without going to treatment, I wouldn’t have gotten clean. But until I was willing to change, each treatment center was nothing but a holding tank.
