Everyone can dream
We all do it, staring out of the window, thinking about the places we want to go, the things we want to do, and who we want to be. We’ve done this since we were kids, right? But honestly, I think we’ve forgotten how to believe in our dreams, and that’s why so many of us are not living our dream lives.
I was like that; living a life that was not my dream. This is how I know it’s possible for all of us to create a life that we love, even if we aren’t living it right now. If you had told me I’d be teaching other people how to create the life of their dreams seven years ago, I would have raised an eyebrow and given you a ‘look.’ Seven years ago, I was sick and tired. My body and spirit were out of alignment and I was unhappy. I wanted something more from life, something better and different, I just didn’t know what it was back then.
The problem was I didn’t even know what I wanted anymore, I was so busy taking care of everyone else, and making money that I wasn’t even taking the time to think about me or my dreams. I was a mom after all, so wasn’t that what I was “supposed” to be doing?
The truth is I wasn’t capable of being the best mom without my own interests and dreams, I was in crisis mode and that’s when I started to make some changes.
Know yourself to know your dreams
It’s hard to follow your dreams if you don’t know what they are so step one would be to get to know yourself and your dreams again through spending some time thinking about it and journaling or making lists of things that you would love to be, do, or have! What would you really love if you could call in anything? Don’t worry about money or being practical, just dream and journal. You don’t need to share this with anyone either, it’s ok to nurture your dreams and keep them close to your heart.
Next, choose a couple of your dreams and think about the qualities of your dream. If having long days to read on the beach in a hammock with no children saying, “mom, mom, mom” sounds dreamy, the qualities of that dream might be, quiet alone time for reading, time out in nature alone, or just some peaceful lazy time. Now, that is the exact information we need to get you on the right path to following your dreams.
The time is now!
Incorporate the qualities of your dreams into your life NOW. If you dream of being a writer living in a cabin in the forest, but you aren’t even writing consistently, you can easily see the incongruence between your actions and your dreams. Start a regular writing routine by getting up a bit earlier and setting up a space dedicated to your writing, complete with pictures of the forest and you will be on your way!
Take your dreams for a test drive, literally! I once thought I wanted to be a homesteader, so I bought a farmhouse and five acres in the country, only to find I don’t like gardening, animal care, or living in the middle of nowhere. Turns out I\’m more of a farmers market shopper than a farmer. I could have saved myself a lot of time, money, and energy renting a farmhouse and giving it a go. Get creative and see if there’s a way to follow your dreams on a trial basis.
Nurture your dreams
Finally, don’t give up, nurture your dreams with some kind of action daily, read or take classes and learn new skills that will help you follow your dreams, save money towards a big goal, and take action on any opportunities that come your way. Dreams don’t just happen they are the result of clarity, many small steps, and commitment.
