Living an embodied life is a continuous call and response to each moment as it presents itself. It is an active practice of being fully present, in mind, heart, body, and soul, to what is moving within us and what is before us waiting to be seen. We are vulnerable in this place, and it requires courage to stay here.
In our complex humanity, we can quickly lose connection with ourselves and how we embody our lives. Fear of being hurt or rejected can make us hide parts of our being. We hide our need for love and acknowledgment in an attempt to please others, for acceptance, for our survival, and to feel a sense of belonging.
The problem is, this way of living goes against our inner knowing. We begin to distance ourselves from who we are and who we came here to be. Soon we are moving through our lives with a misplaced or discordant rhythm. As we continue participating in this dance, we become a ghost of who we are and who we came to be. This specter of ourselves is the one who forms relationships that often become problematic and creates distance from a loving relationship with ourselves.
We learn from childhood to please others to survive. We know not to cry, at least not too much. We learn to be compliant, silent, and not talk back. We learn to put others\’ needs before our own. We become so distant from our own understanding of ourselves that we live a partitioned life where our true self visits us less and less until we barely recognize it when it knocks at our door.
Somewhere deep within, however, we know we\’ve left a part of ourselves behind or buried our most fragile pieces down underneath a heavy cloak, all in an attempt to keep them from being damaged. We feel their absence, and we grieve the loss of ourselves. I would guess this happens to most of us, in smaller or bigger proportions, at some point in our lives.
The grace is that who we are is always waiting to be discovered. The hidden parts of our being will go to great lengths to be known and to come home again. Mine came back to me in unexpected ways on a brilliant day in early September, many years ago. Part of who I was had been locked away and came to be uncaged. In an instant, I learned the truth that “sometimes the Light will split you open.”[1]
You can read my story and receive some helpful tools to guide you into living your embodied Life in The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care, 25 Tools to Achieve Anything. My chapter unfolds in a time when I frequently danced between two disparate lives. One was a life that falsely promised security and had snowballed into a life I could barely recognize, and the other was the Life hidden deep within, the one I knew to be mine.
Wishing you all success in living your embodied Life!
