Love the Ones You’re With

The word friend means different things to different people. To some, a friend is someone who is keenly aware of the other person’s intellect, temperament, and particular interests and knows how to draw out their friend’s best qualities.

True friends give in return. Each person wants to help the other achieve goals without expecting anything in return because the nature of the relationship is non-competitive. This takes work and skill on both sides. They can inspire, helping to motivate towards a better situational outcome. Friends are there in times of need.”

The following paragraphs are from my chapter Optimus Amicus Best Friends In Any Language in the upcoming book “The Wellness Universe Guide To Complete Self-Care 25 Tools To Achieve Anything.

The Cost of Loneliness

About half or just over 50 percent of Americans engage in meaningful in-person social interactions. When people are lonely, physical and emotional health decline.

Quality companions-friends can have extended conversations leading to better overall emotional and physical health and reduced loneliness.

We rely on our friends for open communication and comfort. Good friendships are the fireworks of life and a meaningful solution to the epidemic of loneliness.

Powerball Friendships

I have won a Powerball lottery when it comes to my friends. We share our feelings on all sorts of matters and topics, chat about life’s struggles, reasons why we’re happy or sad, or spend weekends hanging out and chilling together.

As pals, we are present for each other, respect personal space when needed, and enjoy our everyday environment and life together. The connection of physical, mental, and social health is what defines community. When combined, powerful friendships result.

Exercise Buddy

Friendships unfold in a variety of ways. One way is by partnering with a buddy when going to the gym.  My work as an aquatics instructor has brought me in contact with countless people vigorously exercising their way to physical fitness.

An essential yet little-known aspect of aquatics exercise involves camaraderie. People come to class for the social aspect as much as the workout. We are vulnerable in sopping wet chlorine-bleached bathing suits. We clearly see each other’s physical flaws, those unmistakable areas on our bodies that cannot be well-concealed under too little clingy fabric. Self-confidence issues aside, we do not much care about outer appearances or bathing suit styles.

We are the Aqua Marines and function as a winning team and support one another in life’s challenges. We know we can count on each other just in case help is needed. A swimming pool is our unique space to enhance and improve physical and spiritual well-being.

A dedicated swimming partner is a safety net and mutual support system. Swimming partners are often referred to as spotters or buddies. They are strong people who we can trust to have our backs and lend a hand when assistance is needed or to share a good laugh when we look kind of amusing as we splish-splash around!

Simply the Best

Navy Seals get the buddy aspect of friendship right. In the water, Navy Seals trust and rely on absolute team safety. They call their partners “Swimming Buddies,” and do not make any move without their buddy being present. They are physically strong and mentally disciplined people trusted to have each other’s backs and lend a hand when assistance is needed or when there is no sign of port in sight. Swimming buddies ensure the protection of their partner and know their buddy is present to do the same for them.

Having a swimming buddy who you trust is there for you, who is as accountable as you are, is a real confidence builder. It is about being able to practice water safety while having lots of fun. Special friendships are gratifying and hallmarks of restorative emotional health.

Lean on Me

By Bill Withers

“Lean on me, when you’re not strong

And I’ll be your friend

I’ll help you carry on

For it won’t be long

‘Til I’m gonna need

Somebody to lean on.”

Good health and best friends are the fireworks of life.
