In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month The Wellness Universe is shining a spotlight on those who are dealing with mental health challenges and their caregivers. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) declared this year’s theme is to emphasizes the importance of taking moments to prioritize mental well-being. In view of the theme’s emphasis, this post will focus on caregivers.
Mental health issues don’t only impact the individual experiencing them, their family, friends, teachers, neighbors, coworkers, and the broader community are also impacted.
Supporting Someone with a Mental Health Challenge
As the care provider of someone facing a mental health challenge your role is invaluable. A caregiver is anyone who offers emotional, financial, or practical support.
You might find yourself in a situation where access to proper care makes it difficult to get help or your loved one may resist getting help. You might also experience challenges when called on to provide encouragement and support in a mental health crisis or after hospitalization.
Navigating these situations and deciding on the best course of action may be difficult but figuring out the best way to help is important.
No matter your level of involvement, understanding what your loved one is going through can really help make a positive impact. The support you provide is crucial to your loved one’s recovery and resilience.
Caregiver Self-Care
When someone you care about is dealing with a mental health challenge, it becomes extremely important to prioritize your wellbeing. A common example is that of the flight attendant who says, “you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help someone else with theirs.”
Remember, the emotional rollercoaster that comes with a family member’s health crisis affects you too. Self-care strengthens your resilience and makes you a stronger source of support for your loved one.
Looking after your wellbeing first will better equip you to handle the ups and downs that come with caring for someone with a mental health challenge. Your  newfound resilience will help you adapt to change and bounce back from difficult times.
Caring for yourself not only enhances your resilience, but also enables you to better manage challenging moments and fully appreciate the positive ones.
Understanding How Stress Impacts You
Stress shows up physically, not only mentally. Common signs of stress may include:
- Headaches
- Persistent fatigue
- Gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, constipation, or feeling nauseous
- Muscle pain or tension
- Insomnia
Identify how stress affects you and pinpoint the triggers. Recognizing your key stressors can help you avoid and better manage them when they arise.
