I believe diet has a huge impact on why some many of us in the western world suffer from inflammation. There also several other factors that can cause inflammation including genetics, not enough exercise, stress, and exposure to environmental toxins.

Instead of grabbing an over-the-counter solution to treat inflammation, start with these 5 Alternative Natural Remedies first:

  1. The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) Diet:

This isn’t a weight-loss diet (many have lost weight when using this diet).  AIP is designed to help you reduce chronic inflammation by eating fresh, healthy and delicious foods. To learn more about the foods to avoid and which to consume, I left a resource at the bottom of this article.

  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids:

Because so much of our western diet consists of Omega-6 fatty acid (which ignites inflammation). We must extinguish this inflammation starter with Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are considered essential fatty acids. They are necessary for human health, but our body can’t produce them. You can get these essential fatty acids in foods like salmon, tuna, halibut and even nut oils if you’re not a fan of fish. Not only do Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation, but they help us lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

  1. Turmeric:

Studies have shown that curcumin (which is an antioxidant), found in turmeric, may reduce inflammation in the body. Adults can take up to 400 to 600 mg of turmeric extract three times per day or as directed on the product label. I have found that the dried spice variety is not effective for easing specific conditions. I also love Turmeric Tea (Golden Milk). I invite you to check out one of my favorite recipes.

  1. Essential Oils:

Essential oils have been used for centuries to ease inflammation. Frankincense Essential Oil, the father of all essential oils, is a great oil to start with when fighting inflammation. You can take a 4oz dark-colored, glass bottle and add a carrier oil (I prefer fractionated coconut oil), then add 6 to 8 drops of Frankincense. For optimal results, add in 4 to 6 drops of Ginger Essential Oil to the mixture. (store in a cool dark place should last up to 10 months.)

  1. Bromelain:

Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple juice and in the pineapple stem. This magical plant enzyme can soothe inflamed muscles and connective tissue. You can get Bromelain in a myriad of ways: drink fresh pineapple juice, take a natural bromelain supplement or proteolytic enzyme supplement with bromelain added, and the absolute best way is to eat the fiber-rich core of a juicy, extremely ripe pineapple. The riper the pineapple the softer the core. Because Bromelain prevents blood clotting if you’re on blood thinners, consult with your doctor before using.
