Open to Trust

Trust in Ling Chi Healing

To trust is to open your heart, believe in yourself, and in the abundance of the Universe. To trust is to know the Universe supports your higher good. When you embrace this, everything falls into place, and you move forward with the positive natural flow of life.

Almost all of us go through doubts about something at some time. I have had doubts since I was a small child. My first day at school was the biggest shock of my life. I did not expect to be seated in such a regimented way and told to do things I did not want to do. My whole body shook and I felt my breakfast shooting up my insides. ‘How do I get out? I am trapped?’ My little chest heaved, and hot tears flooded down my cheeks. They refused to stop until my Mum collected me in the early afternoon.

Following that episode at four years old, I had doubts for many years that anything would take place or appear the way I expected it to.

Trust Self Search

Part of the human dilemma is that, basically, we do not truly accept who we are. We have an encompassing obstacle in our unwillingness to face, accept and trust ourselves. We can spend our whole life wishing, hoping, imagining, and even pretending that we are someone else or something different. We live in denial.

Pause and take a breath

How much do I trust myself?
Do I keep coming up against the same difficulty?
Do I feel life is working for me?
Do I ask for help when I struggle with doubt?

Developing a Spiritual Practice

When I committed to a spiritual practice, it transformed my self-doubt into an ability to learn to trust and have faith. The joy of being able to share with senior and experienced practitioners within a sangha or community helped me to feel safe and sped up my journey.

In your spiritual practice, you have a wonderful opportunity to open up and share. A chance to explore, to see if there is a better or different way to approach your problems and doubts, and learn to trust.

True spiritual trust blossoms within us when we accept ourselves and open our hearts. Deep within, we can discover and experience the truth that enfolds the whole of existence.

What is the Problem?

There are basic obstacles to the ability to trust and lead a full spiritual life.

Pause and take a breath

Do I love myself?
Do I like myself?
Do I keep aspects of my life hidden?
Do I try to keep parts of my personality hidden?
Do I have dark inner secrets?
Are there parts of me I am scared to allow anyone else to see?
Am I embarrassed about who I perceive myself to be?
Am I committed to a spiritual life?
Do I feel that a deep spiritual life is the most worthwhile goal?

For some, the commitment to a full spiritual life seems out of reach. There is a feeling that something within is fundamentally wrong. This stops us from working to purify our hearts and making progress on a spiritual path.

Trust is Sharing

There is often a sense that before we can open and expose our deep inner flaws to others, we must, at least to some extent, correct the problems. The opposite is true; when we take refuge in a community or sangha, we have the love and support to help us open our hearts. Here, we can let down the walls and open up to expose our true thoughts, feelings, and mistakes. We can share the obstacles and doubts we are pushing through, and share the way we are coping with problems and the difficulties we are facing.

When we open this way, trust develops, and we can allow ourselves to share without being judged.

Trust is Non-Judgement

As a spiritual teacher and healer, I know that when I join and share with someone, either as a spiritual friend or as a counsellor, I begin to understand their approach to life. I witness and see their suffering, and as I hold Love and Light for their trust and healing process to unfold, it softens the habitual, deeply held desire to hide personal darkness and challenges.

Sometimes, we feel that the only response someone can give us is negative. Trust develops when we know those close to and around us, will not look and judge us.

Pause and take a breath

Do I feel that people view me negatively?
Do I bind myself with hard self-judgement?
Am I ready to soften my hard protective shell?
Am I ready to view myself without self-judgement?
Do I trust myself not to judge?
Am I ready to view myself without criticism?
Am I ready to view myself without revulsion?
Do I trust others not to judge me?
Do I see myself from a non-judgmental place?
Do I know everything within me is pure?

Trust in Buddhism

To trust in Buddhism is to know that we are fundamentally pure. Our heart and the Buddha heart are the same.

To develop trust, we must be willing to see and accept our obstacles, self-judgements and outer judgements. We must learn to trust ourselves, trust in others and trust in our spiritual path.

In Buddhism, to take refuge in the Sangha is to trust in the process to purify your heart and help you move closer to the Buddha. To find the Buddha within. This trust forms the ground of spiritual life and practice.

When you follow your path, you learn to trust the unfolding of your karma and the world’s karma to find true peace and joy. Without trust, you will always be wishing for a different life and a different world.

How Do I Learn to Trust?

Learning to trust is like learning to meditate. When we first begin to meditate, our minds race. We accept this and continue to bring it back, again and again, constantly letting go of frustration. We hold onto the faith that eventually our heart and mind will learn to let go of obsessive thought patterns and desires. When we let go and allow meditation to happen, true peace, love, light and joy flow naturally through us.

In learning to trust, we accept our doubts and our mistrust and work to soften them by acting with trust. By learning to trust ourselves and to open our hearts, we can awaken a deep trust that embraces all of existence and knows that there is nothing we need to doubt or fear.

Trust in Action

To develop trust, begin by expecting the best to happen. Believe in your ability to create what you want, to know you deserve the best you can imagine. Believe in yourself, your purpose and your life without doubt.

It is not enough to sit around and believe that you trust. You need to demonstrate trust. You must listen to your inner guidance and take action on it.

Trust is the link that connects the mental world and the physical world. It is the flow of energy that occurs between the conception of an idea and its manifestation in the world.

I know when I am pursuing my higher purpose. I see things happen naturally. Energy flows easily through life. Doors open, people appear and coincidences happen. Everything falls into place.

Pause and take a breath

I trust that my dreams are already real.
My dreams take shape on the mental plane.
My dreams and ideas are awaiting the perfect time to appear.
I trust my higher self to bring the right things at the right time.
I trust that everything comes to me at the perfect time and in the perfect way.
I surrender to my higher good.

Exercise: Putting Trust Into Action

Take five minutes to list as many things you can think of that you once wanted, imagined, or fantasised about having that you received. This can include objects, events and people.

Choose five items on your list. Recall the level of trust you had that you would get them.
How did the trust feel?
How did you feel while you waited for these things to appear or happen?
What did you do to affirm your trust that they would come to you?

List five items that you want now. These can be items, people, spiritual attainment or whatever comes to you.
Which do you trust that you will create and receive?

Pick one item from your list.
What action can you take to demonstrate trust that you will receive it?

To trust is to stop cutting yourself, your life and the world around you into pieces with your judgmental mind. When your judgement stops, your heart opens to truth. Everything within you, the world and the universe can be experienced as Buddha.
