As a HeartMath® Certified Coach for almost 20 years, I have learned that the best way to achieve a desired outcome is to start with the end in mind, i.e., the desired outcome. You know that expression, “Let’s just get to the heart of it?” Interestingly, not only is that the goal, it’s also the way there!
I call it Heart Power, that sweet spot of emotions, intentions, and actions where body, mind, and soul are balanced and optimized in our health, relationships, resilience, and performance.
Take your health as an example. Beginning with the end in mind, let’s say you want to live a long and healthy life. People usually begin with their particular circumstances, focus on that specific need, and then look for solutions. It makes sense. If you have a flat tire, you fix the tire. If you have repeated flat tires, however, you might consider another approach. Like, change your route!
For those wanting to lose weight, they might begin researching the best foods for weight loss, get themselves back to the gym, begin a detox program, or a diet. Oftentimes, this process gets repeated over and over again with some success and a whole lot of setbacks.
Perhaps, you have digestive issues, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, headaches, or sleep challenges. Again, this same process oftentimes unfolds. What can I take so that my stomach or my head doesn’t hurt? What medications will reduce my blood sugar level or blood pressure, and what medication will help me sleep at night?
Let’s step back a bit so that we stop using up a whole lot of time, money, and energy that we want and need to spend on achieving our dreams, helping others, and creating wonderful memories along the way.
At the heart of the matter, I believe, is we all want to live healthy, happy, and successful lives; however, you might define that. So, let’s begin with the design of the human body so that we can provide it what it needs to give us the results we want. After all, who wants to spend years trying one thing after another, feeling defeated, and victim to our circumstances, over and over again?
The human body
So, let’s start with how human beings are designed. Our teeth are mostly flat. That means we’re omnivores who eat mostly plant food. Our intestines are over 20 feet long, so we need lots of fiber found in plant food.
Our heart has its own brain, most of its cells are neural. The heart makes many decisions on its own and sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. Every system in the body wants to be in sync with the heart rhythm to reduce stress, aka, wear and tear over time on those systems and organs. So, learning to send a coherent heart signal to the brain throughout the day is key to optimal health, performance, and longevity and only takes seconds.
