We all know that a well-balanced diet is essential to health and fitness, but did you know that eating well appears to be a key factor when it comes to maintaining your balance. A study from the Journal of Gerontology showed that adults in their 60s who ate a healthy diet performed better on a variety of physical activities, including their ability to balance. So, if you want to function at your peak and keep your balance, eat a healthy balanced diet!
A healthy gut is a healthy being; think prebiotics. A whole-food, natural-balanced diet supports good gut bacteria and helps with various digestive problems, as well as boosting your immune system. We’ve all heard of probiotics which help to re-establish the good bacteria that has been destroyed by the use of antibiotics, illness, and stress, but we also need to pay attention to what are called prebiotics.
Living inside of your gut are 300 to 500 different kinds of bacteria containing nearly two million genes. Like a fingerprint, each person\’s microbiota is unique; the mix of bacteria in your body is different from everyone else\’s mix. It’s determined partly by your mother’s microbiota, the environment that you’re exposed to at birth, and partly from your diet and lifestyle.
The bacteria live throughout your body, but the ones in your gut may have the biggest impact on your well-being. They line your entire digestive system. Most live in your intestines and colon. They affect everything from your metabolism to your mood and your immune system.
Support and prevention
The best way to support your gut health is with prebiotic, or natural foods that act like fertilizer to help ensure the growth of your bacteria. Probiotics, on the other hand, are natural substances we use to replace bacteria that have been damaged by antibiotics or illness.
Prevention is always better than cure, so some great prebiotic foods are bananas, cocoa, flaxseed, oats, garlic, and onion. Natural whole foods are the best way to get both prebiotics, as oftentimes supplements are adulterated, not always what they are purported to be. Just remember you are what and how you eat, so help your gut to grow healthy bacteria!
Many organs work together to make up your digestive system
These organs take the food and liquids you consume and break them down into simpler forms, such as proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins, and minerals. The nutrients are then transported across the small intestine and into the bloodstream where they provide energy for growth and repair.
Digestive enzymes are necessary for this process, as they break down molecules like fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into even smaller molecules that can be easily absorbed.
There are three main types of digestive enzymes:
- Protease: Break down protein into small peptides and amino acids
- Lipase: Break down fat into three fatty acids plus a glycerol molecule
- Amylase: Break down carbs like starch into simple sugars
If the body is unable to make enough digestive enzymes, food molecules cannot be digested properly. This can lead to digestive disorders like lactose intolerance, as well as accelerate the process of aging. Thus, eating foods that are high in natural digestive enzymes can help improve digestion.
Here are 12 foods that contain natural digestive enzymes: pineapples, papayas, mangoes, honey, bananas, avocados, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, kiwifruit, and ginger.
