My grandmother and I shared a special connection when I was a child. I spent time in the summers in her tiny town having great adventures with the neighbor’s giant sheepdog, planting gardens together, learning to sew, and enjoying country cooking at its finest. It wasn’t just Grandma’s effusive and loving personality; it was something more, it was her energy. That creative, curious, open-hearted sense of joy radiated out from her little house onto the porch and into the summer air. It was the kind of place where dreams were free to grow.
Alma passed away when I was 15. I’m not sure if it was my faith or intuition, but her death was a transition from physical visits to an ongoing spiritual connectedness. I never forgot the joy I felt around her and how it gave me the freedom to fantasize about the life I wanted to create. But over time, those fantasies faded as overwhelming pressures to do all the things I “should” emerged. Raised in a conservative Christian home, I should conform to certain expectations of women. As a competitive global executive, I should be a progressive influence for change. I should be able to fix my son’s narcolepsy, my 21-year marriage, and the cancer scare that emerged before I blinked. Alas, I couldn’t be all things to all people, and I was “should-ing” all over myself about it.
Allowing the “should monster” to fill our lives with pressures creates burnout. This video tells the true story of how Grandma sent snakes to represent an answer to my frustrations. Watch to find out what the slithering sightings meant and how they can help you tap into that childlike joy again, too!
