“But I\’ll tell you what hermits realize. If you go off into a far, far forest and get very quiet, you\’ll come to understand that you\’re connected with everything” –Alan Watts
There is a popular saying, “As above so below, as within so without.”
This saying is attributed to the Greek, Hermes Trismegistus, also known as Thoth in ancient Egypt and acknowledged as a “scribe for the Gods.”
This principle of correspondence speaks to the mirror-image relationship between all cosmos. It simply says that the greater and the lesser are alike. The universe and Earth are of the same pattern. Nature and man reflect each other. By observing one relation you gain knowledge of the reflected whole.
In other words, the meaning of “as above so below,” is that everything is a microcosm of the macrocosm.
We see the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos; from the largest scale all the way down to the smallest sub-atomic substance including the metaphysical. Contemplate the macrocosm as the universe and the microcosm being you. A deeper inquiry into this idea can bring some pretty potent revelation.
We all need to show ourselves some love from time to time to maintain a balance of our mind, body, and soul. Once these connections are understood and nurtured, you will find a peaceful mindset.
Something very important to consider here is that from this concept of we are all connected, what you do for yourself ripples out and impacts everyone else on this planet.
Another thing that is important to remember is that you are a valuable human being. You have to truly believe that you can love yourself and that you deserve to receive love. Some people may find this to be a difficult hurdle to jump over, but it is required in order to take positive steps forward.
Start with the microcosm… Let\’s explore your mind, body, and soul:
-
Your Mind.
In order to show love to yourself, you need to master your mind. This can prove to be one of the most difficult tasks. Negative thinking tends to sneak in, in some fashion or flavor every day and it\’s your job to combat this thinking pattern.
- Addictions.
These can range from seemingly harmless problems to severe life disruptions. To start treating yourself right, you need to master your addictions. This might mean controlling what goes into your body or guarding your time spent on television, shopping, or the computer.
- Personal Development.
You\’ll want to discover the power of positive thinking. There are many books and resources that can help you discover the “glass half full” mentality.
- Relationships.
Your relationships play a large role in how you judge your self-worth. You need to surround yourself with positive people and make the best of all situations.
-
Your Body.
Maintaining a healthy body is just as important as maintaining a healthy mind. When you concentrate on your health, you gain energy, focus, and happiness.
- Exercise.
If you make a moderate exercise routine a part of your day, it could be enough to maintain a great body image. If you have weight to lose, you may wish to adopt a routine that supports a healthy body size (of course, after discussing what is best for you with a healthcare professional).
- Nutrition.
Eating a healthy diet will energize you and make you feel great throughout the day. Strive to eat a balanced diet, but don\’t feel bad if you slip up every once in a while.
-
Your Soul.
Your soul or spirit is your life force. Your soul is where you find your peace and deeper purpose.
- Spirituality.
Chances are your spiritual beliefs will address the questions and answers when it comes to your soul. Practicing your flavor of spirituality will help strengthen your soul. If you don\’t have a practice you can still engage in activities that you find peaceful and meaningful.
- Enlightenment.
This is often described as a moment of revelation where you discover something about your inner self or about the world and how it works. You could read and write about it endlessly, but you can only continue living your life in order to experience it.
By knowing yourself as one, and by consciously blending your microcosmic-self with the macrocosmic-whole, greater degrees of unity can be experienced.
Dramatic shifts start to happen in your consciousness. This is because you are flowing in the rhythm of the totality of the self, even though you may not understand what that completely means at the level of the human intellect.
It is simply to know that you are experiencing yourself as the part contained within a vast and all-inclusive whole. You are the whole containing many parts. Through unity, you learn how to use your connection consciously to tap into the same power that drives the entire universe.
The key to awakening such an awesome ability is to shift in the way that you interact in the world, acting as one with the world and not separated.
