What is faith?
If you do a Google search of the word, by definition, it is:
Faith /fāTH/ noun: faith
- Complete trust or confidence in someone or something. “this restores one\’s faith in politicians”
synonyms: trust, belief, confidence, conviction; more optimism, hopefulness, hope. “he justified his boss\’s faith in him”
- Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.
Faith for many can be difficult, it may not come easy. It is not visible or tangible, and it may mean different things to different people.
Faith is kind of like a muscle, it must be used and exercised to grow. With Faith, you must have something to believe in, some require physical evidence while others will believe no matter what. It can be a feeling deep within, a feeling of ease, of belief, and of love and truth.
It is a choice and not something that can be forced. The saying ‘just have Faith and everything will work out’ is often used by others when someone we love may be going through a tough situation. But, if a person is struggling and doesn’t understand what that statement means, as loving as it may be, it will mean nothing to that person and may unintentionally make it harder for them to get through the challenge they are going through.
“Faith: The ability to believe without seeing. You can’t actually see love, yet you know it exists simply because you have felt it. Seeing isn’t always believing, sometimes you just have to feel something to know that it exists.” – Kim Bayne
Faith can be as simple as believing a person has the ability to do something, they don’t believe that they are capable of, you believe it and that creates faith within. It is something that no matter what, you believe they can do it, you have that deep belief that if they try, they will accomplish it. That is faith.
In the Bible, Matthew 21:22 states, “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
Meaning you must have faith in order to receive it. But, how do you grow such faith? You grow it little by little, by believing, by paying attention to the little things that you ask for, that you have been given.
Do you have to believe in God to have faith? Not necessarily. It doesn’t have to be religious to be real. It does, however, come from being spiritual. Every religion believes in and practices it. But, you don’t have to be from any specific religion to have faith. It can come from a deep-rooted, spiritually-based belief. Spirituality and religion are two totally separate things. Yes, they can go hand in hand, but religion is a specific entity, where spirituality comes from deep within.
Learning to have faith can be an education into learning to trust ourselves and a higher power, God, or source (whatever your choice of belief is), and that which we believe to be true.
Having faith can make the challenges we go through in life a little easier to handle because we know that by being faithful, everything will work out. That doesn’t mean the challenges won’t suck at times, it simply means that we know that with every single challenge that we have faced and gone through, things have always worked out, one way or another.
I personally believe that having faith in life is so very important. It can give us hope, it can bring calm in the midst of a storm, and it helps us to believe in something bigger than ourselves.
