There’s a lot of buzz around the practice of chakra healing and balancing, but what is it and why is it important? Let’s look at what the chakras are and how they influence our health.
What are chakras and what do they do?
The chakras govern our life experiences and therefore have a profound impact on all areas of our lives.
They are a core part of our energy system, influencing and responding to each moment. It is, therefore, very important to become familiar with the chakras and have a working knowledge of their governing issues and how they influence you.
The term “manages” refers to the seven core energy centers located along the central column/spine of the body that manage the flow of energy between the body and the energy field.
Chakras function as energy transmitters, receivers, and filters. They continuously open and close to manage the flow of energy in and out of the body. Additionally, they translate, process, and store our life experiences. Each oversees different elements of consciousness and physical functions, and each has a unique expression of life force energy.
How do chakras work?
The chakras are continuously interacting with our inner and outer world, responding to people, circumstances, and events. A healthy, balanced chakra opens and closes fluidly to send, receive, and filter energy as we interact with life.
When imbalanced, the natural flow and filtering of energy are impacted. Chakras become over or underactive, and no longer manage the flow of energy and information effectively.
Chakras are also centers of consciousness, designed to translate, process, and digest our experiences. When we have the resources to fully process events in our lives, the chakra remains healthy and is strengthened by those experiences. We evolve, learn, and grow.
How do they get out of balance?
Because chakras process our experiences, many things impact their health. When we are unable to navigate and process our experiences, the energy from those events gets lodged in the chakra(s) that correlate to experience. This leads to imbalances, creating numerous challenges in our lives unless we do our inner work and heal.
Here are a few examples of things that influence the health of the chakras:
Conditioning. Our family, schools, peers, community, religious institutions, the media, and society tell us who we should be, how we should act, what is acceptable, and what we should think, believe, and value. These influence our development, behaviors, sense of self, self-worth, what we value, and the choices that we make.
Cultural patterns and expectations within our families and community play a huge role in our interpretation of the world and our role within it. The expectations, rituals, habits, and beliefs all carry strong messages. They communicate our values, our role in the community, what within us is acceptable (or not), and what our life should look like. These expectations often include shaming nonconforming individuals
Family/household roles tell us about our place in the world. Not just our place as a child, but also who we should be as an adult.
Chronic stress and traumatic events have a significant influence on the health of the chakras. These include a broad scope of experiences that include losses, substance abuse, poverty, bullying, abuse, domestic violence, medical trauma, or experiencing a tragic event or accident.
In addition to things that happen, our chakras are also impacted by things that should have happened but did not, such as whether we are loved, supported, and nurtured.
All these examples can adversely impact the health of the chakras if they are not processed and healed.
What happens to us when they are out of balance?
When unable to process and heal, the imbalances that occur may range from mild or acute, short-term to chronic. Variables that influence this include the severity of the event, past unhealed wounding in the affected areas, cumulative effects of stressors, and resources available, including coping skills and effective family and community support systems.
When out of balance, many areas of our lives are affected. Here are a few examples of how chakra imbalances manifest:
- Ungroundedness, restlessness, or spaciness
- Unhealthy boundaries
- People pleasing
- Toxic relationships
- Disconnection from self
- Self-sabotage
- Playing the victim
- Controlling behaviors
- Difficulty meeting life’s demands
- Lacking compassion
- Judgmental
- Inability to speak your truth
- Passive aggressive behaviors
- Distorted reality
- Rigid belief systems
- Closed-mindedness
How do you heal your chakras?
Bearing in mind the complexity of the chakra system, chakra healing is a complex and ongoing personal development journey. There are no shortcuts or quick fixes that will heal a lifetime of trauma and harmful conditioning, however, there are basic steps you can take to improve the health and functioning of your chakras.
Above all, do your inner work. Take active steps to address those experiences in your life that have created imbalances. This is essential if you want to make lasting, and sustainable changes that improve your life. Find a qualified therapist, healer, or coach that specializes in helping with your unique challenges and commit to working with them.
Additionally, here are a few things that will support the health of your chakras:
- Gratitude
- Exercise
