When the FIFA Women’s World Cup arrives in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, 2027, the world will celebrate speed, skill, and determination. As the first Women’s World Cup staged in South America, it offers a chance to redefine sporting success. Visibility matters, but so does how players are treated when the cameras turn away.
Behind every spectacular goal stands a woman navigating challenges spectators rarely see. At The Wellness Universe, we believe an athlete’s wellbeing deserves as much attention as her performance. Supporting the whole person means caring for mind, body, and community, both on and off the field.
The Pressures We Cannot See
Elite soccer demands more than physical endurance. Selection uncertainty, competition, relentless schedules, public criticism, and injury fears can affect sleep, confidence, and mental health.
A 2024 study of 74 professional women footballers, highlighted by FIFPRO, found that 55% reported sport-related psychological distress at the 12-month assessment. Across the study’s assessments, 15–20% reported symptoms of disordered eating. These figures concern a specific research group, not every player worldwide, but they remind us that elite athletes are not immune to emotional struggles.
Nutrition matters beyond body image. When athletes consistently lack sufficient energy for training and recovery, they may develop relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs), affecting bone health, menstrual function, mood, and performance. Eating well is about health and resilience, not meeting an appearance standard.
When the Crowd Follows Players Home
The pressure does not end at the final whistle. According to FIFA and FIFPRO, 152 players—about one in five—received targeted abusive, discriminatory, or threatening messages during the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Australian defender Ellie Carpenter faced a wave of online abuse following her team’s semifinal defeat to England. Her experience shows how quickly sporting criticism can become personal harassment. Players deserve space to make mistakes, process disappointment, and recover without threats or humiliation.
Physical Recovery Is Emotional Recovery
Injuries affect more than muscles and joints. They can interrupt an athlete’s sense of identity, connection with teammates, and confidence about the future.
A 2025 study of German professional soccer, covering seven seasons, found women’s match-related ACL injury incidence was approximately 2.5 times the men’s rate. Rehabilitation involves more than healing a knee: fear of reinjury, isolation, and uncertainty about returning to competition also deserve attention.
Female-specific health needs are too often overlooked. Research shared by UEFA in 2026 found that 88% of surveyed adult players said their menstrual cycle affected training or matches, while 86% had never received education about menstrual health in relation to soccer.
A Better Game Begins With Better Support
As the road to FIFA 2027 continues, clubs, federations, and coaches can make change tangible: confidential mental-health check-ins, qualified sports psychologists, individualized recovery plans, and evidence-based injury-prevention programs should be routine. So should clear, stigma-free education about nutrition and menstrual health.
Teammates and families can help by listening without judgment, recognizing shifts in mood or energy, and encouraging professional support when needed. Fans can celebrate excellence without reducing athletes to a scoreline, appearance, or social-media target.
At The Wellness Universe, we envision a sporting culture where compassion and performance reinforce each other. The greatest legacy of the 2027 Women’s World Cup would be more than inspiring girls to play: it would be ensuring they can pursue their dreams without sacrificing their wellbeing.
