A Wealth of Women’s Health – Finding Light In Darkness

It’s winter in NYC, and the city is currently extra lit up with Christmas lights and Hanukkah menorahs. This concept of finding light in darkness is powerful and universal, holding meaning across cultures and contexts, but especially for women. Finding light speaks to our resilience, our capacity for hope, and the belief that even in the midst of great difficulty, there is always potential for something better.

Now, I’m a big fan of candles in general. Growing up in a semi-observant Jewish home, my mom and I lit Shabbos candles every Friday evening. But Hanukkah was (and still is) always my favorite – a holiday all about the miracle of light.

So, if like many women you are stressing the winter holidays, here are some ways to find more light in your life.

Finding Your Inner Light

  • Recognize your own inner strength – your resilience and ability to overcome challenges. Know that your core values and beliefs are a light that guides you through darkness and confusion.
  • Reframe challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Look for the silver linings, even in difficult situations. Remember that when one door closes, another one opens!
  • Channel your darkness into creative expression, whether through art, writing, music,or any other form of self-expression. I personally enjoy coloring, writing, and knitting.

Finding Light In Connection

  • Seek out and nurture supportive relationships with friends, family, or like-minded individuals. Their love and understanding can be a source of light in your darkness. Remember that family can be created, even if your blood relations aren’t there for you.
  • Be a light for others by offering your compassion, help, and support. Spreading kindness not only brightens the world around you, but also your own path. The other day I told a mother of five on the subway what a great job she was doing with all those kids. Her smile was huge!
  • Find inspiration in stories of others who have overcome adversity. Their courage and resilience can illuminate your own path forward. Seriously, other people have gone through what you’re going through. There are so many online groups, especially here at WU, who can help you.

Finding Light In the World

  • Immerse yourself in the natural world. Find solace and beauty in the sunrise, the starry night sky, or the gentle flow of a river. Here in lower Manhattan, I visit the Seaport to be near the river, and I spend as much time as I can in parks and green spaces. It helps!
  • Appreciate the small joys in life, a warm cup of coffee, a walk in the park, a laugh with a loved one. These moments are sparks of light in the darkness. Notice the cute dog jackets, have some cocoa, and find the beauty.
  • Find meaning and purpose in your life, whether through work, hobbies,or simply being present for those you love. Choose who you gift with your energy and attention!

Remember, finding light in darkness is a journey, not a destination. There will still be times when the darkness feels overwhelming but know that even the smallest flicker of light can guide you towards hope and renewal.

  1. Hello! I could have sworn I’ve been to this blog before but after browsing through some of the post I realized it’s new to me. Anyways, I’m definitely happy I found it and I’ll be book-marking and checking back frequently!

  2. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance. I must say you have done a very good job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super quick for me on Internet explorer. Excellent Blog!
