What Are the Odds?
Four friends make plans to meet for lunch in the San Francisco Bay Area. A family funeral calls me to Colorado, and I reluctantly cancel my lunch plans.
Two days later, I’m waiting at Gate C-41 in Denver for my Southwest flight to Oakland. Meanwhile, my friend Douglas departs San Francisco for Baltimore, connecting through Denver.
Neither of us knows the other is traveling.
Neither of us expects to see the other.
Some estimates suggest the odds of such an encounter might be somewhere in the neighborhood of one in several thousand, perhaps even as high as one in 10,000.
Whatever the actual number, one thing is certain.
It was astonishingly unlikely.
Yet this is exactly what happened.
Douglas and I had planned to meet for lunch with two other dear friends on Friday in the San Francisco Bay Area. Instead, while the others gathered for lunch, I was saying goodbye to a beloved family member in Colorado.
On Sunday morning, my sister and I were at Denver International Airport waiting for our 9:40 a.m. Southwest flight home to Oakland. We found seats near Gate C-41 and waited for the boarding announcement.
Meanwhile, Douglas had departed San Francisco on a Southwest flight and was connecting through Denver on his way to Baltimore.
As Douglas walked through the concourse toward his connecting flight, something caught his attention.
Is that Janette? he wondered.
We were supposed to have shared lunch in California just two days earlier.
He looked again.
It really was me.
At almost that same moment, I looked up, and there stood Douglas.
For a few seconds, we simply stared at each other before breaking into smiles, laughter, and a warm embrace.
“Douglas, is that really you?” I asked.
Out of the thousands of people moving through one of the busiest airports in the country, our paths crossed at Gate C-41 just moments before I boarded my flight home.
My sister had heard me speak highly of Douglas for years, but had never had the opportunity to meet him. Introductions were made, and the three of us stood there smiling, laughing, and marveling at what had just unfolded.
Then I reached for my phone.
“We have to get a picture!” I said as I started to take a selfie.
My sister, being her wonderful self, smiled and said, “Here, let me take it.”
She captured the moment for us.

Photo courtesy of my sister, who happened to be there to witness this unexpected reunion.
Whenever I look at that photograph, I don’t just see two friends unexpectedly reunited in a busy airport. I see joy arriving where disappointment had once been.
Most of all, I see what I have come to think of as a divine appointment.
Later, I found myself replaying the remarkable chain of events that made our encounter possible.
A lunch had to be canceled. A family funeral changed my travel plans. Douglas happened to be traveling that same weekend, and somehow we both found ourselves flying Southwest through Denver.
Somehow, our flights brought us through Denver at just the right moment.
Douglas happened to walk past Gate C-41.
He glanced toward the departure gate.
“Is that Janette?”
I happened to look up.
What are the odds?
I’ll let the statisticians debate the number. I simply know what happened.
Some people might call it an extraordinary coincidence.
I experienced it as a beautiful reminder that sometimes life unfolds in ways we could never have planned.
Not every unexpected event carries a deeper meaning, and I don’t claim to know why some moments happen as they do. But every once in a while, life offers us an encounter that fills us with awe and gratitude.
For me, this was one of those moments.
It also reminded me of something else.
If Douglas had been looking down at his phone…
If I had been distracted…
If either of us had arrived a few minutes earlier or later…
We might have missed each other entirely.
Sometimes the greatest gifts begin with simply looking up.
Perhaps that’s true in more ways than one.
Sometimes the moments that leave the deepest imprint on our hearts are the ones we never planned. They arrive unexpectedly, inviting us to pause, pay attention, and savor the wonder of the moment.
As I reflect on Gate C-41, I realize this story isn’t really about an airport.
It’s about remaining open to wonder, trusting that even when our carefully made plans fall apart, beautiful moments can still find us. It’s about recognizing that joy and sorrow can exist in the same weekend, paying attention to the unexpected gifts that cross our paths, and remembering that some of life’s most meaningful encounters don’t happen at the destination.
They happen in the connection.
We never shared the lunch we had planned.
Instead, we shared a few unexpected minutes in the middle of a busy airport.
Those few minutes became a memory I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.
Whenever I look at that photograph, I don’t just remember Gate C-41. I remember grace. I remember gratitude. I remember the beauty of paying attention. And I’m especially grateful my sister was there to witness the moment and preserve it with a photograph we’ll always treasure.
And I remember that while we missed our lunch appointment…
…we didn’t miss our divine appointment.
Reflection
Have you ever experienced your own “Gate C-41” moment?
Perhaps it wasn’t at an airport. Maybe it was an unexpected conversation, a chance encounter, a delayed appointment, a wrong turn, or an unforeseen detour that quietly became one of life’s greatest blessings.
Sometimes our carefully made plans are interrupted.
Sometimes our paths are unexpectedly rerouted.
And sometimes, right in the middle of the journey, we discover a gift we never could have planned.
I’d love to hear about your own “Gate C-41” moment in the comments.
Perhaps your story will remind someone else to look up, remain open to wonder, and trust that even life’s unexpected detours may hold beautiful surprises waiting to be discovered.
After all…
Perhaps life’s most beautiful appointments aren’t written in our calendars.
They’re written in our willingness to look up… and notice.
