Pro-active aging: 7 tips to treat yourself with loving care

Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.

Betty Friedan

Who doesn’t want to age with an abundance of health, energy, and wellbeing? While it\’s a fact that aging shows up physically in our bodies and on our faces, we do not need to stand by the wayside with our well-worn thought pattern “this is the way it is” thinking.

We have the generous gift of utilizing easy resources to create and cultivate pro-active aging centered on health and wellbeing. Proactive aging is nothing more than positive energy moving into and out of you.

When we switch lanes from being less consistent with our self-care and health routines to becoming and being consistent, we step into the role of being ambassadors for others to step into better care for themselves all through our own proactive journey.

Incorporating some new habits while mindfully releasing some old ones is key and available to everyone. Enter proactive positive aging, move over self-resignation!

Take to heart the following tips for proactive aging.

1. Be kind to your skin

Vanity aside, what you consistently do for the skin on your face will keep your skin barrier healthy, giving you not only healthy glowing skin but a wonderful dose of feel-good energy. Your skin is one of the largest organs covering every inch of your body. This outer covering ages dramatically when not tended well.

A simple daily AM and PM skincare routine is a vital key to aging well and having healthy skin. The result? You not only look good, you feel good!

Follow this simple am/pm skincare routine:

  • Cleanse your skin lightly in the morning and more attentively in the evening to remove makeup and residues from face products as well as environmental dirt and dust from being out and about. Even though you may not visibly see this, it\’s on your face and needs cleansing every day.
  • Spritz on toner to open pores and keep your skin moist and damp. Now your clean and damp skin is ready for the next product!
  • Apply your daytime serum (if using one) followed by a daytime moisturizer. Follow this same step in the evening. You’ll use a nighttime serum (if using a serum) along with an evening moisturizer or heavier cream.

4. Apply sunscreen to your face every day (AM only but if out in the sun reapply often.)

2. Exercise with intention

Get moving daily or at least a few times during the week. Exercise hydrates your muscles and bones while improving blood flow and oxygen which feed your body. Exercise consistently by doing something you enjoy whether it\’s walking, cycling, swimming, tennis, dancing, etc. is an anti-aging hug. When you feel energized by the physical movement it shows up in all aspects of your life.

3. Eat healthfully

What you put into your body has the proactive power to either amplify aging or enhance your health and energy. Instead of giving up your favorite perhaps not-so-healthy foods, think of daily adding healthy food choices to your diet. Proactive anti-aging foods include fruits and veggies, clean proteins (meat and non-meat), nuts, seeds, beans, and grass-fed organic dairy, and nut or grain beverages.

4. Get good sleep

Sleep is one of the keys to proactive aging. Poor sleep literally shows up on our faces with sagging skin, puffy eyes, dark circles, and the inability to think clearly. Aim for 6-8 hours of sleep. Consult medical guidance if you have ongoing sleep issues.

Quick sleep tips:

  • Create an evening self-care sleep routine that invites good sleep such as staying away from using alcohol and caffeine products close to bedtime.
  • Limit electronics usage and exercising before bed as these have been shown to inhibit a good sleep by overstimulating both body and mind.
  • Set up your room to be a relaxing sleep environment.

5. Reduce daily stress

Stress takes a toll on your physical and mental health which may show up later with premature wrinkles, hair loss, weight gain, and mental health issues.

Here are some possibilities:

  • Get outdoors and connect with nature. Even sitting by a window with an outdoor view counts.
  • Craft a personal morning routine that makes you feel nurtured as you begin your day ahead.
  • Find and tend to something that creates calming and peace as a counter to daily stressors.

6. Find new hobbies

Try something new that interests you. When you find something, you like that’s outside of your daily routine and obligations you maintain your sense of purpose which keeps your mind and body in a state of active positive energy. Our brains thrive on doing and learning new things.

7. Practice mindfulness

Today’s overstimulated world can take a toll on our health and wellbeing causing us to become disconnected and anxious. Our bodies and minds need time to renew and rest as a means to counter the busyness which, if not addressed, leads to a state of stress.

Mindfulness benefits include reduced stress, improved focus, increased health, and better emotional regulation, and most importantly happiness and greater ease in all of life.
