The Freedom of Health

the freedom of health

When people say “the greatest wealth is health,” it can sound a bit cliché. One of those sayings that gets repeated so often it almost loses meaning.

But here’s the reality.

When your health is good, you rarely think about it. You move through life assuming your body will keep up. When your health is not okay, it becomes everything. Your focus, your energy, your decisions. And you will do almost anything to get it back.

I know this personally.

Both of my parents died of cancer, and I was right there in the middle of it. Watching, supporting, researching, hoping, and fighting alongside them. When you witness the struggle for survival up close, it changes you. Like any traumatic experience, it shaped me deeply and taught me lessons I never expected to learn.

One of the biggest lessons was this: in most cases, we have far more choice over our health than we realise.

For a long time, I felt like a victim of genetics. Cancer ran in my family, and I assumed that meant it would eventually be my story too. But after years of research, study, and lived experience in holistic health, mindset, and lifestyle medicine, I came to a very different conclusion.

In most cases, we are not victims of our genes. We influence how our genes express. We shape the internal environment of our body every single day.

That is empowering. And it is also a responsibility.

Below are the foundational pillars that drive our health journey. Nothing extreme. Nothing complicated. Just small, intentional choices that can dramatically impact both lifespan and healthspan. Because living longer only matters if we are well, capable, and present all the way through.

Mindset, Stress, and Perception

This sits at the top of the list for a reason.

How we experience life has a profound effect on our health. Chronic stress, unresolved emotional load, and outdated belief systems keep the body in survival mode. When this happens, stress hormones surge, cortisol rises, and we get stuck in fight-or-flight.

That is not where healing happens.

Healing happens in calm. In safety. In rest and repair.

Finding ways to calm the nervous system, reduce daily stress, and update your belief blueprint is essential for long-term health. Breathwork, meditation, journaling, nervous system regulation, and simply slowing down all help move the body into a parasympathetic state where healing can occur.

Your thoughts are not harmless. They are chemical instructions to your body.

Diet

Everything you put in your mouth is information.

Your body reads food as signals. The saying “shit in, shit out” may not sound refined, but it is accurate. Highly processed foods, artificial sweeteners, seed oils, and chemical-laden products tell the body it is under stress.

If you want your body to thrive, feed it real food.

Go back to basics. Whole foods. Single ingredients. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Good quality protein. Healthy fats. And more water than you think you need.

Small changes here can create noticeable shifts very quickly.

Movement

Daily movement matters, but it does not need to be intense.

Choose something you enjoy, or at least something you can do consistently. You do not need a gym membership or a marathon plan. Start with a ten-minute walk each day and build from there.

For women over 40, weight-bearing exercise is especially important. Muscle supports metabolism, hormones, bone density, and long-term independence. Squats, lunges, resistance bands, and even wall push-ups count.

Preserving muscle mass in later years can determine whether we live independently or rely on others.

Sleep

I know, it’s not exciting.

But quality sleep is one of the most powerful health tools we have. Seven to eight hours of good sleep each night supports immune function, hormone balance, brain health, and emotional resilience.

Create a sleep routine. Go to bed and wake up at similar times. Keep your room dark and cool. Get off devices before bed. And yes, many people sleep better on their own.

Sleep is not lazy. It is restorative.

Supplementation

Even with the best intentions, most people are deficient in key nutrients.

Stress levels are high. Soils are depleted. Food quality is nowhere near what it once was. Add in busy lives and poor sleep, and the body burns through nutrients far faster than we can replace them through food alone.

This is where supplementation becomes important.

Supplements are not a replacement for good nutrition or lifestyle habits. They are a support. They help fill the gaps and give the body what it needs to function, regulate, and repair properly.

My personal non-negotiables are simple and effective.

Vitamin D3 with K2 supports immune health, bone strength, mood, and hormone balance. These two work together and should be taken in combination.

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes in the body, yet it is one of the most common deficiencies. It supports the nervous system, sleep quality, muscle function, and stress regulation.

Omega-3 fatty acids support brain health, heart health, inflammation reduction, and cellular repair. Most modern diets are overloaded with inflammatory omega-6 fats, making omega-3 even more important for balance.

Quality matters. Cheap supplements often do very little. Do your research, read labels, and choose high-quality, bioavailable products. And if you are unsure where to start, reach out to me. I am always happy to share what I personally use and recommend.

Earthing and Grounding

This is one of the simplest and most accessible health practices available.

Get your bare feet on grass, sand, or earth for at least five minutes a day. Earthing has been shown to help reduce inflammation, balance cortisol, improve sleep, and calm the nervous system.

If getting outside is not always possible, earthing mats and sheets are a great alternative. I use both and love them.

Binaural Beats

Binaural beats help shift the brain into a relaxed, meditative state.

Pop your headphones on, block out distractions, and within minutes, your mind begins to slow down. Mental noise softens. Clarity improves. That constant sense of urgency fades.

Free options are readily available on YouTube and Spotify.

Sunlight and Nature

Get outside. Stand in the sun. Spend time in nature.

Natural light supports circadian rhythm, vitamin D production, hormone balance, and mood. Nature has a calming, grounding effect that modern life often lacks. Even a few minutes outdoors can reset your nervous system.

Joy, Hobbies, and Self-Care

Find what lights you up and do it often.

Read a book. Sit with girlfriends and drink coffee. Garden. Travel. Laugh. Create.

Joy is not indulgent. It is medicine.

Self-care is not just massages and candles. It is boundaries. It is saying no. It is choosing yourself without guilt. It is creating a life that feels nourishing rather than draining.

Health is not about perfection. It is about awareness, choice, and consistency.

Small daily decisions create powerful outcomes. And the moment you choose to take responsibility for your health, everything begins to shift.

Your greatest wealth is not money, status, or success.

It is the body and mind that allow you to enjoy your life.

And that is worth protecting.

  1. Thanks, Kim. I love how you frame choice, not from blame, but from awareness and responsibility. The emphasis on calming the nervous system, simple daily habits, and joy as medicine feels especially timely. A beautiful invitation to protect our greatest wealth with intention and compassion.
