The Truth About Detoxification

My mother sat across from me in our living room. She held her words close to her heart, hesitating to let them be heard. She was looking at me, her smart biology-teacher-daughter who had come halfway around the world to care for her through the direst of circumstances.  Poisonous treatments left her writhing in pain, too weak to even eat. As she silently considered her options she asked, “Can the liver heal?”

It sounded to me like a hopeful request. “I don’t know,” I answered. I was never taught anything about how the body innately knows how to heal. The truth is nearly NOBODY is taught about toxicity, or what it might mean to detoxify. It feels like we’ve had to learn these topics on our own. Biology courses – what I learned and was taught in schools – never prepared me for a conversation with anyone about the innate intelligence held physically, emotionally, and spiritually in every cell. “Then, I don’t want any more chemo,” my mother stated matter-of-factly. Her decision to let go of medical treatments in favor of living her life was a moment I’ll never forget. It’s when she held more hope for herself than what her doctors were herding her toward.

Toxicity is often overlooked as a cause of the multitudes of chronic health issues we face today – not only for the damage done to the body by heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxins, but also because toxicity interferes with every function and chemical reaction in the body. Follow the path of pain and inflammation, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, gut issues, and a whole host of cardiac and autoimmune issues and you’re likely to find heavy metals, processed foods, and medical treatments that give people the temporary relief of symptoms without actually trying to help people heal. In fact, even in acute situations, other causes seem to be easier to blame – like genetics, poor diet, or lack of exercise.

Your Body’s Normal Detox Functions

Detoxification is a natural process that occurs in the body at all times. Every moment, we are constantly exposed to toxins – from food we eat to air we breathe, and from products we apply directly to our skin to the medicines and chemicals we use. Normal detoxification works to eliminate, neutralize, or store toxins.

Many of our vital organs are constantly working to filter and eliminate toxins – liver, kidneys, lungs, colon, and skin support these natural detoxification functions. They filter and clean the blood, eliminate waste, and protect the body from harmful toxins. Though the body’s physiology is complex, the modern world offers a highly toxic environment. Our greater exposure to heavy metals and complex industrial chemicals stress our bodies to the limit, making it difficult to manage and eliminate all of the toxins we encounter every day. As a result, the toxins that don’t get eliminated get stored or sequestered in body cells. In fact, the body creates fat cells especially to hold toxins it can’t eliminate. Why is it so hard for some people to lose weight? Or, if people do lose weight, they have extreme detox symptoms like skin rashes, nausea, headaches, muscle aches and weakness. Toxins stored in fat cells that get released cause a huge toxic overload for the liver, skin, lungs, colon, and kidneys to reprocess. You experience toxicity in a huge way. This is called a Herxheimer reaction.

Helping Your Body Detox

The stress and strain your body encounters through toxic exposure eventually becomes too much. Kidneys become weakened and less efficient. Arteries become clogged with toxic sludge. The colon becomes inflamed and less able to not only absorb water and nutrients, but also move waste out of the body. Nerves, muscles, and bones become stressed with the body burden of toxicity. It’s important, then, to utilize a do-it-yourself approach whenever possible to help the body detox. Consider it a part of maintenance, as you would maintain the smooth functioning of your car. Fortunately, it’s easy to change a clogged filter in your car. It’s not so easy, however, to change one of your own filters (kidneys or lungs, for example).

The Problem with Toxicity

Medicine tends to focus on symptoms – all of the things that have gone wrong with the body. Little credit may be given to the benefits of a holistic approach to helping things go right in the body.

A healthy immune system attacks old, diseased, or foreign cells. Without lead interfering, calcium can be deposited in bones for a stronger skeleton. Without mercury present in the blood, red blood cells can carry oxygen, and nerves can form a protective myelin sheath instead of short-circuiting. Without pesticides, plastics, and endocrine disruptors, children can develop a healthy reproductive system, and adults wishing to start a family can have fewer concerns about scarring, infertility, and other reproductive issues.

Detoxification Mistakes and Fear of Detoxification

You may have heard of detox teas, herbal detox, colon cleanses, detox diets and chelation therapy for detoxification. Though some of these methods are helpful, they may not provide the Total Detox Cleanse you need for best results. Let’s go over a few of these mistakes to find out why people are so afraid of detoxification.

  1. Too much, too fast. Consider this. It took years for your body to process and hide toxins in your bones, brain, liver, fat cells, and joints. The body’s ability to sequester (hide) toxins here and there seems like a good idea, doesn’t it? It works for a while until the burden becomes too great and interferes with organ and cell functioning. When people hear about detoxifying, they often decide to get after it. Nutritional cleanses, teas, and flushes force toxins into the bloodstream. If this happens faster than the body can eliminate the toxins, detox symptoms result. No wonder people fear detox. It feels awful when you detox this way.
  2. Saunas and perspiration. This method can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. The mistake here would be to not replenish fluids and electrolytes as you lose toxins through the skin.
  3. Laxatives or diuretics are designed to increase elimination through urine or fecal wasting. These methods fall into both of the above categories of “too much, too fast” and dehydration. Users may also develop a dependence on diuretics and laxatives.
  4. IV chelation EDTA. This method of detoxification has been around for a long time and was, in fact, the first commercially available chelating agent. Chelating agents can chemically bond with toxic minerals, metals, and chemicals within the body. Classic chelation may not be well-tolerated. It tends to be expensive and is usually supplied intravenously, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, chelating agents tend to be non-specific and may remove healthy metals (calcium, magnesium, etc.) as well as toxic metals. Finally, most chelators may cause a host of unwanted side effects, most of which can be linked to dehydration or electrolyte imbalance caused by the chelating agent.
  5. Detox diets. These tend to be short-term, inefficient solutions that can involve fasting and the elimination of certain foods like alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods. In an attempt to change up the diet, toxic overload once again asks the liver and other organs to reprocess toxins as they are released into the blood. It may be impossible to eat enough cilantro and drink enough green juice to have any long-lasting effect.

Detoxify the Right Way

I wish we had then what I have now. I have come to believe that there’s no way my mother could have healed from her toxic situation, even before she had medical intervention of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. She was too toxic, mainly from her work with lead and radioactive substances. In the early 1980’s toxicity (except perhaps from cigarette smoke) wasn’t looked at as a cause for cancer. Little has changed. Tell me if a doctor is likely to test you for heavy metals before offering a prescription. But if I had the right detox for my mother, she would not have suffered. She could have lived to be 100 years old in good health!
