What we believe, we hold as true.
What we hold as true informs our decisions and subsequent actions. What if what we hold as true, is not? How far from the truth might we be?
“Anything can be true to the one who holds it as such,
however, it doesn’t make it the Truth.”
As aware people on the planet know, the truth is more important than ever. However, it is also becoming more and more elusive. The challenge is discerning the truth from the noise, intentional disinformation, and chaos that distracts us from the truth.
I contend, there has never been a time in the history of humanity when the truth needs to be more front and center than now. This doesn’t mean the truth has not been important in the past, only that now, given all we see and experience in the world, the truth is more important than ever.
I believe there have never been more people open and receptive to new ideas, and ways of thinking and living, than now. And yet, never have more people been further from the truth.
Have you ever considered that what you hold and believe to be true might not be? Add to that, your life decisions are all made against the backdrop of what you hold as true. This brings me back to the questions posed above, “how far from the truth might you be?”
I believe our purpose for being on this planet in human form is “the progressive realization of the truth.” Every choice we make, every action we take, and every subsequent consequence (experience) offers the opportunity to realize more and more of the truth if we are open to it. Well, in all honesty, even if we are not open to it, the opportunity for this realization still exists.
Why is the truth important? It helps us answer the most basic of questions we ask ourselves at some point in life. Who am I? Why am I here? How can I best serve?
The truth is important because it brings clarity which invites better choices resulting in better outcomes or experiences. However, clarity is often clouded by thoughts and beliefs that are untrue and disempowering. They are like a dense morning fog that obscures the truth of what is right in front of us. It is not until the morning sun shines brightly that the fog lifts and all that is before us is revealed.
The truth allows for the expansion of our greater understanding. As we understand what has been misunderstood, we more clearly see our best next steps and opportunities. The truth leads to honesty, our innate ability to be truthful with ourselves and others about who we are and what we are capable of creating and experiencing. Honesty leads to trust. Trust in ourselves, trust in one another, and trust in the process of life’s unfolding.
Discernment is key
How does one discern the truth so they have greater clarity (clearsightedness), make better, truthful choices, and enjoy more of what life has to offer? Here are Four Keys to Discernment I have found invaluable in my “progressive realization of the truth:
1. Be willing to let go of what you believe is true. “Today what I know to be true, tomorrow might not be.” This creates the opening for new information, ideas, and perspectives. What we know and believe is only what we know and believe at this moment. at any moment we can have an experience or receive new information that changes what we believe.
2. Be open to realizing the truth. Understand what has been misunderstood without judgment or criticism. You must have a desire to know the truth to invite the truth into your lived experience. This isn’t about proving oneself or another person wrong. This is the progressive realization of the truth I believe is life’s purpose.
3. Be aware of the influence of confirmation bias. Look at all points of view. Conformation bias is when a person only seeks and accepts information that supports beliefs already held. This is exacerbated through social media which consistently presents information based on what is most frequently researched or click on.
4. Trust yourself to discern and make bold decisions accordingly. We all have the innate ability to discern the truth. The more we trust this inner knowing, the more powerful it becomes, and the more powerful it becomes, the more trust we place it and ourselves.
As we discern and act from the truth for ourselves, we benefit the whole of humanity in its collective realization of the Truth. Therefore, it is incumbent upon each of us to take responsibility for our own lives, to discern what is true before acting on it. As the “soul” authority in our respective lives, we determine who and what we allow in our minds and lives, and ultimately, what we put out into the world as our unique self-expression.
“We are enslaved by our own limiting thoughts and beliefs. It is in challenging them that the shackles fall away, the truth is realized, and we are truly set free.”
