16 Ways to Promote Wellbeing Today

Promote wellbeing today by actively choosing your focus, getting good at soothing yourself, and reconnecting to your spiritual center. Over the years, I’ve gathered collective wisdom from clients, friends, and my own life experiences on how to live our best lives. Here are sixteen ways my friends and I promote wellbeing in our lives through practicing choice, self-soothing, and spiritual health.

Notice and Choose Your Focus

  1. Notice your thoughts throughout the day. Are you focused on fear of what you don’t want? Or are you actively, consciously choosing to focus on creating the world you DO WANT to see?
  2. Notice what you are putting into your mouth. Are you defaulting to anxious eating and consuming high-fat, salt, sugar, and chemical additives with little nutritional value? Or are you actively consciously choosing higher-quality foods with vitamins, minerals, and life force to nourish your body temple?
  3. Notice what is coming out of your mouth. Are you speaking words and using a tone of voice that comes off as harsh, critical, or whiny to the people you love and care about? Or are you actively, consciously choosing to monitor your words and tone of voice to connect heartfully and listen deeply to the other person so you nurture your relationships that matter?
  4. Notice how you are treating yourself. Are you listening to a critical, harsh voice in your head that you would never tolerate from a friend? Or are you actively, consciously choosing to nurture yourself with kind thoughts and allow yourself the grace of being human?
  5. Notice your connection to your wise inner being, your soul, and your connection to Divine Love. Are you avoiding, dismissing, or ignoring what you know in your heart to be true for you? Or are you actively, consciously choosing to make time and space and listen to your heart wisdom, which steadily guides you when you are paying attention?

Self-soothing

Practice and get good at calming and soothing yourself.

Make a list of your top 5-10 ways to soothe yourself when you’re off track. Post the list on your bathroom mirror or next to your favorite chair so you see the reminder when you want help getting back to center.

Here are my top six self-soothing tools that I use daily to feel centered, grounded, and in the flow of life. Maybe this will spark your list.

  1. Toggle: Notice my thoughts are not going in a helpful direction and consciously choose to toggle my mind to new thoughts. I feel empowered when I choose to listen to my wise inner voice and not the whiny, victim, or harsh bully voice.
  2. Plug in: I focus my attention on my heart and breathe 10 heart breaths. I focus behind my heart in front of my spine. connecting inward to my Soul. I feel connected and plugged in to God the infinite and my natural state of Well-Being.
  3. Notice beauty: I love to watch the play of light and shadows. Reflections of light remind me to find light within each moment.
  4. Move my body: Allow my body to move as it wants without judgment or shame. Allow my mind to observe without commentary. As my body moves, patterns unwind and open. I see new possibilities emerging.
  5. Go outside: In nature, I breathe fresh air and listen to the birds. I notice wind blowing the trees, and I hear the crunch under my feet. I am reminded that I am part of the flow of life.
  6. Gratitude: List 10 things I’m grateful for in the moment. When I cannot sleep, I count my gratitude backward from 64. If I get through all 64, I start over.

As you go about your day today, I hope you will remember to find new ways to soothe yourself when you feel off track and get yourself back to center gracefully, easily, and joyfully.

Practice Spiritual Health

Maybe you remember a time when you had peaceful thoughts and felt connected to your Spiritual Center—then something changed, and you lost it. Some days, your peaceful feeling changes like a Minnesota weather pattern: sixty degrees and sunny changes to thirty degrees and snowy in a few hours. Your peaceful feeling turns into a stormy mood, and you feel disconnected from your spiritual center.

When I facilitated a group discussion on spiritual health, I gathered collective wisdom shared in the group on how to reconnect to your Spiritual Center when you lose it. I want to share the group’s insights with you. When I asked our group, What does Spiritual Health feel like? most people seemed to know the feeling in their guts and in their hearts. Spiritual Health feels like a sense of calmness, where you breathe easily with no feeling of constriction. You can see Spiritual Health on another person’s peaceful face. Spiritual Health also includes a feeling of connection to a deeper part of yourself and connection to others outside of yourself. You feel centered, grounded, and whole. We called that feeling connection to our Spiritual Center.

I asked the group: What do you do to get back to your Spiritual Center when you lose it?
The group’s collective wisdom for staying spiritually healthy and connected to their spiritual center fell into five categories:

Physical wellbeing: Honoring your physical body through exercise, yoga, and massage.

Meditation: Taking quiet time, deep breathing, listening to music, going home to where you feel grounded, getting out in nature, stepping back to observe, and not letting the outside in; soaking in a hot tub with a glass of wine.

Intention: Prevention —start the day with prayer, prioritize and plan your day, and intend that you will stay centered and in-the-flow today.

Gratitude: At the end of the day, review what the best part of the day was for you, keep a gratitude journal, and express appreciation for the good that you have.

Love: Connect to others, hang with the dogs for pet therapy, family mealtime, express unconditional love.

The group highlighted the basics. Take care of your body, which is the physical vessel of your spirit. Take time to quiet your mind and emotions. Be intentional about how you spend your time. Count your blessings. Express love.

Our collective wisdom knows the basic recipe for Spiritual Health. What will you do to nurture your spiritual wellbeing today?

You’re invited to nurture yourself, your relationships, and the world you are creating by promoting wellbeing today. Focus on curiosity to notice your attitude and choose your response. Practice loving kindness toward yourself through getting good at self-soothing. Develop the spiritual practice of returning to your spiritual center and living in a state of grace.

Each day of life is a gift. What will you do to promote wellbeing today?
