Are you satisfied with your overall quality of life today?
I wasn’t happy with how I felt or being frustrated and tired. As a mom to four sons and small business owner, it seemed like the harder I worked, the more behind I was. With fatigue set in by the middle of the day, I still had a “second shift” when my older sons came home from school. From this point on, we had sports practices, homework, and dinner. This was ongoing and I was not in a good place during this time.
My quality of life improved when I was introduced to some practical and emotional tools which showed me a simple, effective way to manage and get ahead.
Gradually I became more productive, was less stressed and even less tired. I no longer felt like a hamster on a wheel each and every day! The changes I made were small and doable. A big one for me was learning why and how to create a simple morning routine and with this in place mornings went from chaos to calm.
Here are 20 simple tips you can take to gain more time, ease daily stress, and improve your quality of life:
-
Become a student of cultivating gratitude.
Practicing thankfulness and appreciation is a game changer and available to everyone.
-
Get outdoors and in nature.
Being outdoors in a natural setting, whether urban or on a hiking trail, will put you in touch with yourself.
-
Hydrate.
We are 70% water; we need to maintain hydration to feel healthier and balanced.
-
Eat more fresh fruits and veggies.
A diet with fresh fruits and veggies eaten daily feeds your body with vitamins, minerals, fiber and more energy!
-
Keep Moving.
Take at least 10,000 steps daily. Never has there been so much compelling evidence at our disposal and this evidence proves that daily physical movement is good for brain health, can lower high blood pressure, cholesterol, and even decrease some cancers. Yet, we have become even more sedentary due to being overworked and allowing old life habits to take over.
-
Practice sleep hygiene for a restful sleep.
Sleep deprivation causes many health-related problems such as weight gain, low immune system, and anxiety. Try a new sleep routine such as going to bed at a consistent time and turn off your screens at least 30 minutes before lights out.
-
Become a mindfulness practitioner.
To start, be quiet and still. Notice your physical surroundings such as the sunrise or sunset. Notice the aroma of your morning coffee, tea or favorite beverage. Tune into the taste and texture of food as you eat.
-
Be kind.
Even brief moments of being intentionally considerate go a long way and get passed along from recipient to recipient.
-
Volunteer.
Volunteer at your local school, community, food bank, church. You can do this weekly, monthly, or annually. Plug in somewhere and just give.
-
Give it away/donate it.
De-cluttering your desk, closets, pantry, drawers, is a great de-stressor and time saver. As a result, you’ll have more time to spend on more meaningful activities!
-
Control your spending with compassion.
Live on less than you earn. Before purchasing something on impulse, pause and ask if this is something you’ll use/wear and really need.
-
Teach what you know.
We each have something to teach and share. My yoga students often ask me for advice after classes. I enjoy teaching them what I’ve learned to help them on their own journey. Maybe for you, this could look like leading a study or showing others how to do a specific skill.
-
Learn something new.
I am constantly taking yoga teacher trainings, and relevant life coaching master classes so my professional skill set is growth-focused and current. Continued learning keeps your brain healthy and gives you more to share with others!
-
Don’t put off your wellness checkups.
Schedule your annual physical or other appointments you’ve been putting off.
-
Learn to be still.
Silence and stillness are a life-saving means to de-stress, renew, and refresh amidst busy times.
-
Unplug from your devices whenever you can.
Your brain and eyes will thank you!
-
Share a meal with your family and friends weekly.
Connecting with loved ones is life-affirming!
-
Cultivate an AM or PM routine.
You choose what matters to you as you begin and end your day with a consistent self-care routine.
-
Read labels and replace toxic household cleaners.
Replace the cleaners in your kitchen and bath with earth-friendly products. They are better for both you and the environment!
-
Recycle.
Do your part to help care for the world by recycling. Most small towns and cities offer convenient curbside commingled recycling pickup.
