When it comes to healing your gut lining, there’s a lot of confusion out there.
Understandably so, because there’s a lot of buzz about gut healing right now, it’s a complicated topic, so there are a lot of half-truths, misinformation, and marketing to wade through.
In this post, I’m going to do a bit of myth-busting and answer a couple of questions I hear all the time.
The number one question people ask me is, “Should I take probiotics to heal my guts?”
The answer is… Possibly… And, if that’s the only thing you do, you’re wasting your money. At best, they might help you feel a bit better, but they don’t change the root cause.
When Probiotics Fail
Probiotics alone fail to create good gut health because:
- Over-the-counter probiotics are generic. Eventually, doctors will test where your microbiome needs support. Right now, there’s no way to know for sure which ones you need. The best we can do is choose supplements based on symptoms, which can be helpful if you know how to decipher yours.
- Not all probiotics are equal; you need stable, colonizing-forming units. Otherwise, the ‘spaghetti’ won’t stick to the wall, so to speak. The non-colonizing ones can help you feel better while they’re in your system, but they don’t stay in your system. They don’t bring about change to the state of your physical gut.
- This is the most important one. If you’re not getting enough prebiotic fibre, there’s no place for the good bugs to live, and nothing for them to eat. Some supplements do include prebiotics. But you can never make up for a lack of dietary fibre in a little pill or stick pack. Then, the bad bugs flourish, leaving you with cravings and dysfunction.
The truth is, if your eating habits are up to scratch, you might not even need probiotics. And you certainly shouldn’t have to stay on them forever. (Certain ones that can still be beneficial, though.)
Won’t Gut Lining Heal On Its Own?
The next question I hear all the time is, “If I stop eating the foods that are bugging my guts, won’t my gut lining heal on its own?”
The simple answer to that one is, No.
Think of your gut as a bucket… If you’re reading this, your bucket is likely a leaky one. When your gut lining is in a state of disrepair, you’re not absorbing the very nutrients that would repair it.
Fortunately, we have a digestive ally that doesn’t have to be absorbed, and that’s fibre.
I can already hear those people with gut pain and constipation cringing. The key is to eat the right kind of fibre for your Gutsy (Ayurvedic) Type, and for the state of your gut.
You may already know you need to eat more fruits and vegetables. And your best efforts have left you feeling bloated, gassy, and uncomfortable. Ayurveda has a solution for that! (Eat the right plant foods for your Type.)
Post-Biotics and a Healthy Microbiome
A healthy microbiome also creates beneficial substances in the body, called post-biotics.
Those play some important roles, including:
- Healing your gut lining (Are you starting to see why eliminating foods doesn’t cut it?)
- Supporting immune function
- Reducing inflammation
- Inhibiting harmful bacteria
- Supporting healthy metabolism, i.e., they promote fat burning
Emerging research suggests post-biotics may even inhibit the stress response!
Supplements alone will never bring you back to health. BUT, the right ones can help you reclaim your vitality more efficiently.
This is a complaint that comes from people who’ve tried several practitioners and approaches:
“Everybody always says they’re going to help you heal your gut lining, but nobody actually DOES it.”
Honestly, I’m saddened to hear this, because it’s more than possible. To do it, you need to look at your entire gut-heart-mind-Spirit axis. While it might sound complicated, this approach will give you the energy you need to see it through, and more.
Certain foods are healing for your gut lining. They make a big difference to your healing, especially when you’re already eating well. Releasing the deep-seated tension and inflammation in the nervous system is a big part of it, too.
Tips to Start Healing Your Gut
Five tips you can use right now to start healing your gut:
- Hydrate sufficiently. Drink plenty of water, and leave off the ice. You’ve certainly heard this before, but are you doing it?
- Take a few deep breaths before sitting down to each meal. This brings your nervous system back to balance, so you can digest better now.
- Stay off screens at mealtimes, and don’t multitask while you’re eating.
- Incorporate a good quality ghee into your diet. It’s an Ayurvedic superfood and a post-biotic. Taken properly, it can even help you lose fat!
- Eat more plants, especially the ones that most suit your Ayurvedic Type and the state of your gut.
