Wouldn’t you like a more positive life? Let’s clear out some old unneeded beliefs, the old programming. We experience positive and negative programming all of the time. Let’s start to create our own positive programming, and let’s reflect and negate the negative programming, allowing space for what we want in our lives.
Programming is Everywhere
Media tells us to expect a “24-hour” cold or the “three-day flu, and now we are told it is “flu season.” We are expected to believe this programming.
A parent or authority figure tells you, “You are not smart,” or “You can’t play basketball,” or ”You are not pretty.” Did you believe them?
We Downplay the Positive and Accept the Negative
There is an old song, “Accentuate the Positive,” which would be a good affirmation for us.
Accentuate the Positive and Eliminate the Negative
Why do we question the positive? Someone says our outfit looks great or we did a wonderful job, and we question the statement and may be embarrassed. However, if someone says something negative, we tend to absolutely accept the negative, especially if an authority makes the statement.
I remember my high school math teacher saying, “Anyone who gets a ‘C’ in this class will not make it through college.” Programming! How would he know?
Illness and Programming
Doctors tell you that you are likely to get diabetes because “it runs in your family,” and the same message applies to cancer, heart disease, etc. We need to stop and decide if that programming is true. A friend suggested telling the doctor that you were adopted.
When I crushed my wrist, the emergency room doctor told me I would get arthritis. I told him I would NOT get arthritis and have not for two decades.
Eject the Negative
We humans do well with symbols. Raheim, a mentor, suggested two things to do physically when something is not true. First, he said to think of an audio like a CD playing the negative thoughts on your forehead. Then, touch your forehead and think of ejecting the audio. Second, he suggested wearing a rubber band or elastic bracelet on your wrist and snapping it when you come across something negative, whether programming or anything not your truth.
Guilt
Some of the hardest programming is guilt. We are programmed and taught to feel guilty when guilt is unneeded. For instance, if you accidentally trip someone, which you did not intend to do, then you immediately feel guilty. Of course, say you are sorry, but no guilt, please.
Then there is the famous mother’s guilt. Your mom or grandmother makes you feel guilty because you are not doing what she wants you to do. I remember my grandmother invited me to dinner before a class about three blocks away from her house, but an hour before, we received a local weather warning because streets were flooding, and we were advised not to leave our homes. Calling my grandmother, she tried to make me feel guilty for not driving the 12 miles through floodwaters to eat dinner with her. I dismissed her guilt programming.
Let the unneeded guilt and fear go for unintentionally hurting others. Don’t replay the guilt and fear in your mind. You need to let those feelings go to move forward. Eject the negative audios. Intend to do the best you can each day and stop holding guilt.
Dismiss that guilty programming. Eject the audio, snap the elastic bracelet, or symbolically touch your forehead, saying to yourself, “Eject that audio.” If you are not wearing a bracelet or rubber band, then touch your wrist and negate the programming. For example, say to yourself. “No, not my truth.” Then follow your own path.
Reflect and Reprogram
Think about people’s statements about you and the rules people make. Are they just programming you? Just because someone says something does not make it true. When visiting an overseas science leaders conference, a participant at my lunch table said her husband told her she couldn’t learn to drive. I was most surprised this very smart lady accepted her husband’s programming.
Think about your life. Are you limiting your activities or your life because of programming? Reprogram yourself! Negate the negative.
Positive Programming
Let the Universe know what you want. I have a little notebook I call my “Programming Book” where I write what I want in my life. Maybe you could get a notebook, folder, or computer file. My friend just writes her daily “script” on a piece of paper.
Tell the Universe how you want your day to go. What do you want in your life?
- I will wake up with my back feeling wonderful.
- I look forward to going to work each day.
- My surgery will be easy with no pain. I recover quickly.
Affirmations
Think about what negative programming you are carrying.
What affirmation would negate that programming?
You can program for what you want. Affirmations are an easy way to do this.
On days you reflect and want to reframe the programming, think of your own affirmation to lock in your positive programming. Maybe, say, “I am my own person. I am sovereign and follow my own path.” First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt said, “What other people think of me is none of my business.” Take a breath and ignore other people’s opinions trying to program you.
My favorite affirmation is from Emile Coue, who would say, “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.”
You can make your life more positive. Accentuate the Positive and Eliminate the Negative. Write in your own positive programming. Let go of negative programming. Eject those audios and snap those bracelets!

I worked with a man who was a fan of big band-era music so I’m familiar with the song “Accentuate the Positive” and it has a great message. I also love how you invite us to eject the audio playing in our head, dear Theresa. Your article has great tips and ideas to create a more positive life. Happy New Year one and all.
I agree. Accentuate the Positive is such a great simple thing we can do to make our lives better!
