Life Mastery Soul Memos Episode 5: Comparativity Proclivity
A common challenge that many of us face in our lives is a tendency to compare ourselves to others. This has certainly been true in my life, and while sometimes my assessment might inspire me to work harder and be more like the other person, more often than not, I’d actually find myself feeling dejected or depressed because I believed I couldn’t possibly reach the same level. My comparativity proclivity did more to diminish my self-esteem than it did to motivate me.
Comparativity boils down to a deep sense of insecurity embedded in our ego-minds. It is the ego-mind that identifies with accomplishments, achievements, success, and all the other external metrics we have for where we stand in the world. In other words, the ego-mind associates its very existence with attachment to these comparisons. It sees itself as a success or failure according to the comparisons it makes. And when it finds itself falling short, which happens quite often, then it tends to become judgmental and critical of you because the ego-mind itself will never take responsibility for anything that has happened!
Here’s the bottom line, my friend. You are already perfect, just as you are. It may be difficult to accept that, especially if your ego-mind keeps yapping endlessly in your head, but it is the truth. No matter what anyone tells you, you are not defined by what you have, what accomplishments you have made, the amount of money you have accumulated, or any of that stuff. Believe it or not, you aren’t even defined by what you do. It’s actually the other way around!
Who you really are defines what you do, which in turn shapes what you have in the world. Who you really are is a divine, magnificent spiritual being of light and love who happens to be sharing a physical human experience with a lot of other similar beings.
So, outside of simple unattached curiosity, there is absolutely no reason to compare any aspect of yourself to anyone else. Don’t let yourself get caught up in the comparativity game. Stay focused on who you really are, and just allow this fear-based ego-mind proclivity to fade away into the background. You will soon find yourself settling into your natural joy, where life is much more fun.
