Rev. Shelley Leggett
The Wellness Universe (WU): Hello Shelley Leggett, please tell us about yourself and what inspired you to write your chapter in the book The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care: 25 Tools For Transformation.

Shelley Leggett (SL): For a long time, I believed my purpose was helping people find comfort through connecting with their loved ones in Spirit. While that’s still an important part of what I do, something shifted over the years. I realized the conversations I was having weren’t really about mediumship. They were about grief. Family patterns. Old wounds. People trying to make sense of experiences they’d been carrying for decades.

As I began looking more closely at my own life, I discovered some of the grief I carried didn’t actually begin with me. It was during the author call for this book that I realized grief had been quietly passed from one generation to the next in my family until someone became willing to look at it differently. That realization changed not only the way I viewed generational healing, but also the way I viewed my own story.

Today, I’m the founder of The Magical Medium, an ordained Spiritualist minister, and a spiritual mentor who helps people trust themselves and trust Spirit without all the fear or gatekeeping which so often surrounds spirituality. Whether I’m teaching intuition, supporting someone through grief, or helping someone untangle old emotional patterns, my goal is always the same: to help people realize they don’t have to keep carrying what was never theirs to begin with.

That’s what inspired me to write this chapter. I wanted readers to know they are not obligated to carry every emotional burden they’ve inherited. Sometimes the greatest act of self-care isn’t adding something new to your life. It’s finally giving yourself permission to put something down.

WU: What tool do you share in this book, and what can we expect to experience as a result of using this tool?

Shelley Leggett (SL): The tool I share is a simple but powerful exercise to help people begin recognizing inherited grief and the emotional patterns they may have unknowingly been carrying. So many of us assume every emotion, fear, or belief belongs to us when, in reality, some of it has been passed down through generations.

This exercise isn’t about blaming our parents, grandparents, or the generations that came before us. They were carrying their own stories too. Instead, it’s an invitation to become curious. To ask better questions. To notice the patterns that continue showing up in your life and consider whether they truly began with you.

My hope is that readers walk away with a little more compassion for themselves, a new perspective on their own experiences, and the understanding that awareness is often the first step toward healing. You can’t change what you don’t recognize, but once you see the pattern, you finally have the opportunity to choose something different.

WU: How do you know if the pain you’re carrying actually belongs to you?

Shelley Leggett (SL): Most of us never stop to ask that question. We assume every fear, belief, or emotional reaction is ours simply because we’ve lived with it for so long. But what if some of it was inherited?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that we don’t have to own every story we’ve been handed. Sometimes the most life-changing question we can ask ourselves is, “Where did this begin?” That single question has the power to shift how we view ourselves, our families, and our capacity to heal.
