What Freedom Really Means

What Freedom Really Means

I used to think freedom meant having more time. Then I thought it meant more money. Then I thought once I had my life, health, work and relationships sorted, I’d finally relax and enjoy it.

That part never really arrived. On paper, everything was fine. I was doing what I was meant to be doing. But there was this constant low-level heaviness, like I instinctively knew something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t put my finger on exactly why. Not enough to blow things up, just enough to feel tired all the time and kind of ‘off’.

And the older I get, the more I see how common that is, especially for women who are capable, responsible and used to holding everything together. Hustle culture tells us to keep flogging ourselves, and our freedom comes later. Once you push through this season. Once you work harder. Once you get to the next level.

As we women hit our midlife–generally around the 40+ year mark – we start to realise that the season doesn’t end. The finish line just keeps moving, and your body is no longer willing to play along. Your energy changes. Your tolerance for stress drops. The things you used to ignore start demanding attention.

This is such an important part of our life journey . . . the awareness. And it changes what freedom actually looks like. Freedom is no longer about doing more or being more disciplined. It is about doing less of what drains you. It is about waking up without that underlying sense of pressure and stress. It is about having space in your days and in your head, not just ticking things off a list.

This is where hustle culture really falls apart. It treats the body like something to override and manage. Midlife does not allow that. Your body gets louder for a reason, and ignoring it comes at a cost. This is why so many women in their 40s and 50s feel restless, flat or quietly irritated even when life looks good.

Nothing is necessarily wrong. You are just less willing to sacrifice your health, energy and peace to keep up appearances. You are done forcing yourself into a version of life that no longer fits. There is grief in that, a heaviness.

Now is the time when you let go of identities that once kept you safe and productive. But there is also relief. A sense that you can finally stop pushing and start listening.

Freedom in midlife is not about burning your life down and starting over. It is about editing. Simplifying. Choosing more carefully where your energy goes. It is quieter than we were taught to expect, but it is far more sustainable. You do not need more discipline or another productivity system. You do not need to fix yourself. You need permission to redefine freedom in a way that actually supports your body, your nervous system and your life as it is now.

That is what this Freedom series is about. Less hustle. More honesty. And learning how to live in a way that feels lighter instead of harder.

And that’s pretty exciting. We are the masters of our own identity and experience in this life. Once all of the expectations and societal pressure are gone, the freedom is life-changing.
