The other day, I was eating pizza with my grandchildren, and the topic of our conversation was on nothing in particular, really.
Unexpectedly, my six-year-old granddaughter exclaimed, “Grandma, I don’t understand why people get so upset when people die. It is just the circle of life. People are born, then they die. Just like trees and flowers. It is just the cycle of life. When people die, they just go on to the next thing. It is nothing to be sad about.”
Words of wisdom from a six-year-old! Who would have thought?
I probably should mention this is the granddaughter who, at the age of three, saw her other grandmother’s father at the top of the steps, who had died in that exact location years before she was born. She knew how he died (his heart), and where it happened.
What Happens When We Die?
Many times, throughout our lives we are presented with opportunities to grapple with this question. Whether we are grieving the passing of a loved one, or we are faced with our own mortality, all of us at one time or another have wondered, what happens when we die?
Obviously, your particular belief system probably has presented thoughts and answers to this question and being brought up in a rather conservative religious background, my beliefs for many years matched those of my parents. However, when I began to question my beliefs and explore various cultures and belief systems, I found that although the wisdom varied, each different voice echoed words of truth.
Here are three answers I received when I asked the question,“What Happens When We Die” to my Higher Wisdom:
- My Shamanic Voice of Wisdom explained that in the “other” world, there are three realms, commonly known as the Upper-World, the Middle-World, and the Lower-World. Each of these worlds contains within it specific experiences, lessons, and wisdom. In the Lower-World, is the realm of the unconscious, secrets, and deep hidden mysteries. In the Middle-World, is past, present, and future. In the Upper-World, there is Light, Wisdom, Higher Learning, and Love.
When we pass out of our physical body, our consciousness will go to one of these three worlds. When we have learned our lessons, experienced what we need to experience, or changed our vibration to a different frequency, we will pass out from one world and go to another. This is the cycle of life.
- My Buddhist voice of Wisdom began by explaining that our experience in our earthly body is like an individual drop of water in an ocean of consciousness. When we pass, our consciousness returns to the Ocean. We are each part of a whole. The whole of the ocean of consciousness is made up of individual consciousness residing in each of us, like drops of water in the ocean. If we focus on our individual life experiences, we are relating to one drop in an ocean. Each individual drop is connected to other individual drops, but together we make up a whole.
There could be no ocean without individual drops of water, and there could be no individual drops without the ocean. In that way, we are all connected. That is also a lesson in our interconnectivity and how we are able to connect to one another and how I am able to give messages from the Spirit world.
- The last Voice that spoke up showed herself to me as the Egyptian Goddess Bast. Actually, I had initially called her in when I found a kitten out in the wild when I was running. Other than knowing she was the Goddess of Cats, I knew nothing about her. She explained that our thoughts and beliefs affect what we experience when we pass.
Just as my thoughts and prayers to her had brought her energy into my life and helped tame my wild little kitty, she explained that when we think or believe in certain ways, we contribute to what we experience when we die. Our body dies, but our consciousness lives on in another form.
If you have been faced with the question, “What Happens When We Die,” you have probably sought answers from the voices in which you are the most familiar, or the voices that you trust.
Whatever answer you have found that makes you feel good inside yourself is probably the answer that is best for you.
