Laurie Levin, Author, Speaker, Certified Coach, and HeartMath® Certified Coach, a resource for your well-being. As a member of The Wellness Universe, and Best-Selling International Author of the book Call Me A Woman: On Our Way to Equality and Peace.

We wanted to share a bit about their work in the world:

We asked Laurie Levin to share their journey in writing their book. Shining a light and the inside scoop on their inspiration, process, reader reflections, and more.

WU: What influenced you to write your book Call Me A Woman: On Our Way to Equality and Peace?

Laurie: The loss of my mother as a child and multiple sexual assaults, beginning in my college years, led me to write the book. And then fifteen years ago, I read an article about a young woman who had been raped and killed. I was deeply saddened thinking about her family and very short life, and the countless numbers of women who are assaulted every single day.

I was raped my first year of college, then again in a relationship in my twenties, and assaulted on several more occasions spanning a decade. After reading the article about the young woman raped and murdered, I knew it was time for me to speak out.

So I started with a poem. I named it: Call Me A Woman. The poem appears in the front of the book. I knew in my heart that I was to write a book with the same name.

WU: Tell us a bit about your journey. How long did it take you to write? How did writing your book change your life?

Laurie: As I mentioned, my mother passed away when I was quite young; she was 39 and I was 11. It was a devastating loss for our family. Within a couple of years, I came to realize that the traditional masculine values that had become our household norm after my mother’s passing; a lot fewer words, get the job done, and don’t talk too much about your feelings, were also the way of the world. These traditionally-defined masculine values were more valued and anything else was considered weak. Double standards for females and males were everywhere—at school, home, and at work.

While at times writing the book was grueling—spanning 15 years, I did love the process. I learned so much about many things; about myself, about writing, and due to the extensive research I did, I was able to share some powerful insights into how we can move beyond the patriarchy most of the world is trapped within, that has brought us the extraordinary challenges we face today.

How did writing the book change my life? I felt free. I felt peace of mind as I put it all out there, shared ideas, and stories from my heart, to help us close the insidious gender gap that creates way too many hurdles for women and children on a daily basis. Most of us live as though this is just the way it is. Well, it certainly doesn’t have to be. We can live fairly, compassionately, and peacefully as we raise our consciousness and awareness, individually and collectively.

WU: What are your readers sharing? How has your book inspired and impacted lives?

Laurie: I love reading what readers say about the book and am so very appreciative. There are so many people who are ready for a new kind of world; one that is safe, provides equal opportunities and resources for all, free of prejudice, hate, and discrimination.

Here is what one reader said:

The author writes with so much passion. The author turns her personal experience into a call for change. It’s a positive plea for action. When you read the words it seems so simple. Why didn’t I think of this? Why are these things still happening to 50% of our population? As a mother of a son; a must-read for him. So happy to have read this and I am finding myself changing my words every day. Thank you for such an informative book and should be on everybody’s list of books.

Readers share their own stories of assault, their repressed emotions, and feelings that they’ve had for decades, and want to be free of. Also, they’ve shared how surprised they were to learn they were perpetuating their own inequality, unconsciously, living habits of inequality every day.

Readers are thankful to learn how to create equality as they raise their children, in the words, books, activities, and toys they choose. They are planning weddings differently so they can start their marriages out on equal footing. They are also rethinking aging and plan to do so with more ease and grace.

WU: What do you aspire to achieve through your book?

Laurie: Peace; for myself and for the world. Peace is only possible when we treat one another fairly. As girls and women thrive, so can and will the world.

Awareness + 7 Habits of Equality + Love = Peace

WU: Any final words you would like to share?

Laurie: Yes. When we give women the same respect and opportunities as men, we give the world its best chance for peace, prosperity, and survival.

Thank you Laurie Levin for sharing.
