5 Simple Tips for Holiday Well-Being

Adding the holiday hustle and bustle on top of our regular activities can be both exhilarating and exhausting. The season of festivities with all the decorating, cooking, baking, parties, cards, purchases, wrapping, and gift-giving to fit individual preferences, (whew!) can leave us feeling depleted in January.

In the last six weeks of the year, I celebrate two kid birthdays, Thanksgiving dinner, multiple Christmas celebrations, cookie baking, at least one music concert, one theatrical performance, special ethnic holiday dinners, New Year greeting cards, and the annual early-morning-New-Year’s-Eve-global-youth meditation service. Honestly, by New Year’s Eve, I’m done, and I go to bed early. I’ve learned to stay in the flow of well-being for the year-end, grand finale, so I enjoy the magic of the holiday season.

Here are five simple tips to help you stay in the higher flow of well-being this holiday season and all year long.

1)   Limit sugar – I know it’s hard. I’m a recovering sugar addict. I used to hover around the dessert table and repeatedly refill my plate with treats. Notice how much sugar you’re consuming. Notice how you feel, physically and emotionally, when you eat too much sugar. Invite yourself to eat three cookies instead of a plateful of desserts. Eat your favorite dessert first so you don’t feel deprived. Then stop. You can do it.

2)   Move your body – Take an extra walk around the block. Dance to the holiday tunes on the radio. Do a ten-minute yoga YouTube video. Stretch in bed. Do 50 squats in the kitchen while you wait for the tea to steep. Keep moving so you feel less sluggish.  

3)   Toggle your thoughts – Notice when your thoughts become whiney or resentful. Toggle your thoughts to gratitude. Look for something beautiful to appreciate. Notice the twinkling holiday lights. Remember a kindness. Pet your fur baby. Turn complaining into the transformative power of self-love.

4)   Breathe – Notice when you’re feeling stressed, holding your breath, or breathing shallowly. Take a slow, belly breath. Remember, the holidays are supposed to be fun! If your not-best self is the one responding to stress, you and the people around you probably are not having fun. Take another breath. Tune inward to your natural state of well-being within. Is it worth getting upset about?

5)   Quiet time – Schedule down-time for yourself to reflect on the joy of the season. Rest with a mug of tea and listen to your favorite music. Enjoy reading a good book. Reflect on what you learned during the last year. Journal about favorite stories and share them with someone. Or just be still and listen to your heart rhythm.

Yes, life does feel full sometimes maybe this year more than other years. You’ve got what it takes inside yourself to navigate the complexity of life with grace, ease, and joy. Try the five simple tips and pay attention to how you feel. Then, you might want to reconnect with your inner well-being by rebalancing the energy centers in your body.
